Smoke billowed as the temple burned.

Lam Thao District Party Secretary Nguyen Quang Anh said the fire was at the Tam Bao and Thuong Cung houses of the main pagoda, where many ancient statues dating back hundreds of years are kept; the other side rooms of the pagoda were not much affected.

Although the provincial and district authorities arrived promptly, the fire spread quickly and could not be contained because the temple was made of wood.

Immediately after discovering the fire, the provincial and local fire fighting forces were present to try to put out the fire. By around 11am, the fire was under control.

Currently, the authorities have blocked off the scene, assessed the damage and investigated the cause of the fire.
