Businesses together solve the traffic "problem"

Traffic congestion and lack of parking are not only a nuisance to residents, but also a “hidden cost” that weighs heavily on businesses.

To reduce traffic congestion in the city center and improve transportation capacity, the business community proactively proposed appropriate solutions.

Proactively invest in modern infrastructure

On October 15, Viettel Post Joint Stock Corporation (Viettel Post) started construction of the Logistics Center project in Lien Chieu Industrial Park. The project is built on an area of 8.6 hectares with a total investment of more than 722 billion VND, including three warehouse blocks with a total area of nearly 40,000m²2. The center is deployed on a modern technology platform, with data and speed as core values.

Mr. Phung Van Cuong, General Director of Viettel Post, said that according to calculations, the center, when operational, is expected to shorten operating time by 33% and save about 348,000km of transportation per month, reduce fuel costs and emissions, contributing to improving the operational capacity of the entire region and moving towards a green and efficient logistics model.

Not only Viettel Post, recently, logistics centers or peripheral warehouses have been invested in the city, such as: U&I logistics center with a scale of 316 billion VND, Con Ong distribution center with a scale of 100 billion VND in Da Nang High-Tech Park, Transimex Da Nang Center...

Mr. To Van Hiep, former Chairman of the Danang Road Freight Transport Association, said that the development of logistics centers and warehouses in Danang is shifting strongly to the outskirts to meet the increasing demand and reduce traffic congestion in the central area. At the same time, the integration of automation technology and modern sorting lines will increasingly improve the transportation capacity of enterprises.

Investing in modern infrastructure is also an indispensable solution for leading enterprises. Specifically, Truong Hai International Transport and Logistics Company Limited (THILOGY, Truong Hai Group) invests in a multimodal transport system that synchronously connects the seaport, Chu Lai airport (4F planning level), railway and cross-country transport (through Laos and Cambodia).

Or Da Nang Port Joint Stock Company continuously upgrades and expands Tien Sa wharf, invests in exploitation technology to accommodate larger ships and increase cargo handling speed. This helps the flow of containers in and out of the port smoothly, reducing the waiting time for trucks. At the same time, this enterprise is actively participating in the development orientation of Lien Chieu port in the future, aiming to shift large cargo flows out of the city center.

Long-term solutions needed

Da Nang, like other large cities, is facing the challenge of traffic congestion when the pressure from personal vehicles increases rapidly, while traffic infrastructure and public transport network organization have not kept up. Without synchronous and drastic solutions, congestion will continue to spread to the belt, gateway and suburban connecting axis.

Mr. To Van Hiep said that currently, containers moving from Tien Sa port are forced to go through residential roads. This not only causes congestion but also poses a potential danger if drivers are not careful. Therefore, putting Lien Chieu port into operation and exploitation as soon as possible is an important solution at this time.

However, Mr. Hiep also expressed concern about the future "mistake" when Lien Chieu port is formed, residential areas and logistics services will also spring up. If so, in just a few years, we will repeat the same "story" as Tien Sa port. In this regard, a solution worth considering based on international experience is to develop railways to serve logistics as Thailand and Malaysia are applying.

That is, goods from the port will be transported by rail to get out of the city center, avoiding pressure on urban traffic. In the system of solutions to reduce congestion, it is not only about expanding infrastructure but also need to combine traffic demand management, smart technology and effective traffic organization.

“I myself am running a green logistics business, digitally transforming to join hands with the city in applying smart and sustainable solutions to reduce urban traffic pressure and improve the efficiency of seaport exploitation,” said Mr. Hiep.

Mr. Mai Minh Vuong, Permanent Vice President of the Da Nang City Young Entrepreneurs Association, Director of Nhat Phong Van Joint Stock Company, said that the problem of Da Nang is the lack of synchronization between urban planning and logistics planning. To solve this problem, the city needs to consider logistics as a soft infrastructure of urban development, not just a final logistics service.

Accordingly, the city needs to develop in three main directions: first is urban and traffic stratification with the urban core prioritizing tourism and services; suburban areas and gateways for logistics and transit development. Second is regional connectivity, gathering goods flows by planning trade "hubs" in the Hoa Nhon, Hoa Vang, Lien Chieu areas, directly connecting seaports, highways and airports. Third is applying urban transport management technology, using digital data to coordinate trucks, parking lots, delivery times, avoiding congestion during rush hours.

The Young Entrepreneurs Association will continue to accompany and propose ideas from businesses, and contribute ideas to traffic, logistics, and smart urban projects. At the same time, the association will connect private resources and form a future alliance of Da Nang logistics businesses to promote green infrastructure, transit stations, and smart parking lots.
