Unique artwork 'Revives' fallen rosewood tree after storm Yagi

(PLVN) - More than 6 tons of steel were used to wrap the trunk of a rain tree that fell after Typhoon Yagi, to make branches and leaves with the intention of "catching the sunlight". When the sunlight appears, the rain tree will create a sparkling effect, creating a song of life.

According to statistics, after Typhoon Yagi, Hanoi had about 25,000 trees fell. Many of them were ancient trees that were decades old. This caused much regret for the people because trees not only bring green space but also partly represent the soul of Hanoians. Among the thousands of fallen trees, there was a 70-year-old soapberry tree in Co Tan flower garden, located on the shore of Hoan Kiem Lake.

While cleaning up fallen trees and beautifying the city, Hanoi city leaders received a proposal for the idea of “reviving” the sycamore tree into a work of art, placed right where the tree used to be. After more than half a year of implementation, artist Tia - Thuy Nguyen fulfilled that promise and the project was inaugurated on Earth Day, April 22.

Artist Tia-Thuy Nguyen said that right after the storm, she went to Hanoi and went with her friends to survey, witnessing the scene of green trees lying flat on the ground, her heart felt like it was being squeezed. When she arrived at Co Tan flower garden, the image of a 70-year-old rosewood tree uprooted and being cut down to be taken away made her stop. Immediately, Tia-Thuy Nguyen and her friends contacted the authorities to come up with a plan to "revive" the tree.

After trimming the entire trunk and roots, the female artist covered the trunk with thick, hand-bent stainless steel plates. This step was extremely meticulous so that the steel pieces hugged each rough curve of the trunk. The joints were welded tightly, creating rough knots and grooves like the tree's bark before. The tree branches were simulated with natural, winding lines. The foliage was made from thousands of shimmering steel leaves, dotted with colorful, sparkling quartz "flowers".

More than 6 tons of steel were used to wrap the tree trunk, branches and leaves with the intention of "catching the sunlight". When the sunlight appears, it will create a sparkling effect, creating a song of life. Hanoi has four seasons, no day has the same sunlight, nor does any sunlight repeat, making the work colorful and multifaceted. This is like the myriad forms of life, the multidimensional universe. That is also the message that Tia-Thuy Nguyen sends in the work.

People living in the area around the flower garden were surprised when the ancient soapberry tree was reborn in an unexpected way, sending meaningful and humane messages to everyone. Many domestic and international tourists also took the time to check-in, enjoying the beauty of nature in harmony with human artistic creativity.

Mr. Pham Tuan Long - Chairman of Hoan Kiem District People's Committee at the inauguration ceremony of the "Public Art Project - Revival" at Co Tan Flower Garden which took place on the evening of April 22, 2025, shared: "This fallen acacia tree belongs to the generation of trees imported by the French from Africa to be planted as a pilot street tree. This generation of trees represents a historical period of the capital. "Revival" will contribute to creating a creative space for Hanoi residents as well as tourists to admire and experience every day. Nature will continue to write about the revival, bestowing brilliant rays of sunlight on the work, making it more vivid and attractive. This is also a way to show gratitude to the trees that have fulfilled their mission of providing shade for the city for many years, and to show gratitude to Mother Nature.
