Encounters between Vietnam and opponents
In the history of the 14 previous AFF Cups, not counting the current tournament, the Vietnamese team has faced Myanmar 7 times. All 7 meetings between the two teams in the AFF Cup took place in the group stage. In these 7 meetings, the Vietnamese team won 5 matches, drew 2 matches, and has not lost any matches. Also in these 7 meetings, the Vietnamese team scored a total of 21 goals (an average of 3 goals per match), and only conceded 6 goals (an average of less than 1 goal per match).
Notably, in both home matches against Myanmar in the AFF Cup group stage, the Vietnamese team won all their matches. That was a 7-1 victory at the 2010 AFF Cup, under coach Henrique Calisto (Portuguese) and a 3-0 victory at the 2022 AFF Cup, under coach Park Hang-seo (Korean). In the 3-0 victory of the Vietnamese team against Myanmar 2 years ago, the goalscorers for us were Nguyen Tien Linh and Chau Ngoc Quang, along with an own goal by Myanmar defender Kyaw Zin Lwin. Of these, Nguyen Tien Linh and Chau Ngoc Quang are named in the Vietnamese team participating in the 2024 AFF Cup, preparing to meet Myanmar again.
Tien Linh and Chau Ngoc Quang were the ones who helped the Vietnamese team beat Myanmar 3-0 in the most recent meeting.
Among the victories of the Vietnamese team against Myanmar in the AFF Cup group stage, the 7-1 victory in 2010, at My Dinh Stadium, was also the biggest victory we had against this opponent.
The most surprising victory was the 4-1 victory at the AFF Cup 1996. That year, the Myanmar team was theoretically stronger than the Vietnam team. However, goals from Nguyen Huu Dang, Le Huynh Duc, Tran Cong Minh and Nguyen Hong Son helped the Vietnam team create the "Jurong (Singapore) earthquake", as the Southeast Asian press called the victory of the Vietnam team that year.
Another noteworthy thing is that every time the Vietnamese team beat Myanmar in the group stage, we entered the knockout round of the AFF Cup. In the 1996 AFF Cup, after beating Myanmar 4-1 in the group stage, the Vietnamese team entered the semi-finals and finished third overall. In 2002, we won 4-2 in the group stage and continued to win third place overall. In 2010, the Vietnamese team beat Myanmar 7-1 in the group stage and entered the semi-finals. In 2016, we beat Myanmar 2-1 and entered the semi-finals. In 2022, the Vietnamese team beat Myanmar 3-0 and entered the final.
The history of confrontation is leaning towards the Vietnamese team.
There have only been two times that Myanmar has held the Vietnamese team to a draw at the AFF Cup, that was the 2012 match, which took place at Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok (Thailand), the two teams drew 1-1. The remaining match in 2018, which took place at Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon (Myanmar), the two teams drew 0-0.
Considering past head-to-head records and current strength, the Vietnamese team is highly likely to maintain its unbeaten record against Myanmar in the history of the AFF Cup, when the two sides face each other at Viet Tri Stadium ( Phu Tho ) on December 21. If the Vietnamese team maintains this unbeaten record, coach Kim Sang-sik's team will enter the semi-finals of the AFF Cup 2024 as the first team in Group B.
