Red spots on Mr. Trump's thumb, palm and index finger are clearly visible in a photo of the former President leaving Trump Tower on January 17.
Social media users were quick to speculate about what caused the red spots, with some suggesting he had herpes or had just fallen.
"The former President appears to have multiple injuries to his right hand. It is unknown whether he fell or not," Dr. Jonathan Reiner wrote on X.
While it's difficult to diagnose the condition from just a photo, Dr. Joshua Zeichner, an associate professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, told Business Insider that Trump could have a skin rash.
"Rashes on the hands can be caused by many factors, from infection, inflammation, to external exposure," said Mr. Zeichner, emphasizing that rashes can be caused by many factors, so it is impossible to know for sure unless Mr. Trump speaks up.
The civil trial that Mr. Trump is attending began on January 16 and is expected to end this weekend. This is the second trial related to Ms. Carroll’s allegations against Mr. Trump.
The current civil case revolves around comments Mr. Trump made in 2019. Those comments were determined by a judge to be defamatory, so the only question this time is how Ms. Carroll will be compensated.
The writer's lawyers are seeking $10 million in damages and fines.
During the court session on January 17, there were many arguments between Mr. Trump and Judge Lewis Kaplan, as well as between Mr. Kaplan and Mr. Trump's lawyer, Ms. Alina Habba.
Mr. Kaplan threatened to throw Mr. Trump out of the courtroom for talking too loudly while Ms. Carroll was testifying.
