Wood sales expected to earn billions each year
The types of trees planted on the sidewalks of Ho Chi Minh City are very diverse, such as oil, rosewood, tamarind, lim xet, and monkey skull... During the process of clearing land to implement infrastructure projects, many trees were encroached upon, affecting their development; or self-damaged during the development process, causing unsafety when it rains or winds. To ensure the safety of people when participating in traffic on the roads, the authorities had to cut down many trees, including many valuable and long-standing trees...
A typical example is the case of cutting down a series of trees in the sidewalk renewal project that SGGP Newspaper recently reported. There are two addresses where the trees will be gathered after being cut down, which are Dong Thanh Nursery, belonging to Ho Chi Minh City Urban Green Parks Company Limited (on Dang Thuc Vinh Street, Dong Thanh Commune, Hoc Mon District, Ho Chi Minh City) and the wood yard of Green Environment Construction Company Limited (on Ho Van Tang Street, Tan Phu Trung Commune, Cu Chi District).
In mid-May, SGGP reporters visited Dong Thanh Nursery and witnessed a large amount of wood of various types. Many blocks of wood were exposed to the sun and rain on the open ground, some of which were covered with red mud. At the wood yard of Green Environment Construction Company Limited, located on an empty plot of land surrounded by fences, many blocks of wood had changed color and were covered with moss.
The Ho Chi Minh City Technical Infrastructure Management Center under the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction (hereinafter referred to as the Center) said that after the wood is gathered at the two above-mentioned yards, the unit will announce the selection of an organization to appraise and price the wood, and then continue to select an auction organization. According to the information we have collected from the organization of wood auctions in recent years: On October 19, 2021, the Center issued a notice on the selection of an organization to auction 1,442m3 ( rounded number) of Cam Lien, Cuong Snake, Skull Monkey, Sao Den, Dau... wood recovered from the work of cutting down and clearing trees in Ho Chi Minh City, with a starting price of more than 3.3 billion VND.
In 2022, the Center announced the selection of organizations and consulting units to appraise and price the work of felling and clearing trees from January 1 to June 30 with a volume of 454.4m3 of wood ( rounded). After that, the Center continued to announce the auction of 303m3 of round, diverse wood collected from July 1 to December 31, with a starting price of 1 billion VND. In 2023, from the beginning of the year to the end of August, the volume of wood for valuation is 321m3 ; and from September to the end of the year is 222m3 , with a starting price of 700 million VND. In 2024, from the beginning of the year to the end of September, there will be 3 auctions with a total volume of wood equivalent to 600m3 , with a total starting price of 2.5 billion VND. In particular, most of the wood put up for auction is in area 5 (districts 1, 5, 7, 8, 10, 11) and area 6 (districts Binh Thanh, Go Vap, district 12).
In the role of a wood buyer, we were instructed to contact the winning bidder, the branch of Vietnam Auction Joint Stock Company, Phu Nhuan District, Ho Chi Minh City. Here, the company's staff said that the unit performed the service contract for auctioning the 117.71m3 of wood recovered from the work of cutting down and clearing trees from January to March 2024. Although the contract had expired, this wood lot had not been sold yet, and the company and the Center were having to discuss it again. We expressed that we only wanted to buy oil and rosewood, but this staff said that there was no separate auction for each type of wood, but all types of wood were brought together and auctioned by cubic meter.
Replace 600 trees every year
Regarding the treatment of green wood after felling, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction Vo Khanh Hung said that the raw wood (wood trunks, branches) will be counted and collected and brought back to the location of the green tree management unit (or the project investor) for preservation according to the tree felling and moving permit. For the volume of firewood and wood recovered from the felling and replacement of green trees managed by the Center, it will be brought back to the wood yard for preservation and liquidation will be carried out through a nationwide auction according to regulations. During the implementation process, the Department of Construction has not received any reports of difficulties or problems related to this issue.
Tree felling and relocation are only carried out when the management and maintenance unit detects signs of unsafety, pests and diseases, trees that do not grow after a period of planting, trees that fall due to unusual weather, or are relocated from the construction site of key projects of the city and the country... Currently, there are no cases of tree felling to serve sidewalk renovation and urban beautification in some districts.
The reason for the felling that the press recently reported was that the construction units during the sidewalk renovation process did not comply with the management agency's instructions on the treatment of trees within the project's scope of influence. This caused some trees to show signs of being unsafe, forcing the management unit to cut them down to ensure the safety of residents and visitors, after measures such as pruning, lowering the canopy, reinforcing with cable anchors, and supporting... were ineffective.
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Green Tree Parks Company Limited, each year there is a plan to replace about 600 trees that have died, been damaged, rotten, had pests or are unsafe. This replacement is carried out regularly during the management process, including species such as oil, black star, monkey skull, tamarind with a lifespan of over 60 years; lim xet, tamarind... with a lifespan of over 30 years. This replacement has little impact on the maintenance of type 3 trees (with a trunk diameter of over 20cm), because each year about 500 trees grow to type 3 size and are upgraded to additional types.
Currently, tree care in the whole of Ho Chi Minh City is carried out by bidding, with a total of 84,499 trees of all kinds. Of these, 5,298 are newly planted; in addition, there are many ancient trees planted before 1975, even during the French colonial period, with a common height of 20-30m, many oil trees are up to 30-40m high.
Deputy Director of Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction Vo Khanh Hung: Prioritize the maintenance and upkeep of the existing green space system
According to the program for developing public parks and trees in the area in the period of 2020-2030, Ho Chi Minh City sets a target of achieving an average of 1m2/person per capita by 2030, corresponding to the city's mechanical population at that time. However, with limited land funds, developing more park areas, green areas and planting more trees requires time and resources. Therefore, maintaining and preserving the existing system of parks, green areas and urban trees, ensuring urban safety and aesthetics is a top priority.
