Dong Nai preserves black-shanked douc langurs in Chua Chan mountain

NDO - On May 27, information from the People's Committee of Dong Nai province said that it had decided to approve the results of the project to investigate, allocate the status, population structure, ecological characteristics, and monitoring program of the black-shanked douc langur species in Chua Chan mountain, Xuan Loc district.

Accordingly, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dong Nai was assigned to preside over and coordinate with relevant departments, branches and the People's Committee of Xuan Loc district to implement the project. Through the investigation results, a population of black-shanked douc langurs at Chua Chan mountain, Xuan Loc district was determined to be from 159 to 192 individuals.

In this area, the Black-shanked Douc Langur is distributed at an altitude of 180 to 800m, including 7 well-developed groups, which are in the period of increasing in number. It is recorded that in 2020 and 2021, there were 35 individuals increased; the largest group increased by 10 individuals, the smallest by 1 individual. The groups all have adult and semi-adult males and females, and newborns from October 2020 to November 2021.

The Black-shanked Douc Langur is one of the rare and endangered animals that is prioritized for protection. To conserve the Black-shanked Douc Langur at Chua Chan Mountain, Dong Nai Province authorities have proposed urgent solutions. In particular, building a conservation plan for the period 2022-2025 and a vision to 2030 with specific tasks on management, conservation, scientific research, and human resource training.

Chua Chan Mountain is 837m above sea level. This is the highest mountain in Dong Nai and the second highest in the Southeast, after Ba Den Mountain in Tay Ninh Province (986m high). Chua Chan Mountain has primeval forests and many endemic species, making it an attractive tourist destination that attracts many visitors to explore and experience.
