DTO - On May 7, in Thap Muoi district, Dong Thap Lotus Industry Association coordinated with Dai Viet Lotus Food Joint Stock Company to organize a ceremony to announce the export of lotus root to the Japanese market. Attending the ceremony were Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Phuoc Thien, leaders of provincial departments and branches, leaders of Thap Muoi District People's Committee and lotus growers in the province.

Accordingly, the total volume of lotus root exported to the Japanese market this time is about 15 tons, with a value of nearly 1 billion VND. The raw materials for lotus root production are frozen at temperatures from -18 to -25 degrees Celsius using IQF technology (individual quick freezing method). The raw materials are purchased by Dai Viet Lotus Food Joint Stock Company from Dong Thap and provinces in the Mekong Delta region.

Speaking at the announcement ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thang - Chairman of the Board of Directors, General Director of Dai Viet Sen Food Joint Stock Company said that the current market demand for lotus root products is very large. For the Japanese market, the consumption demand is about 90 - 100 thousand tons of lotus root/year; for the Chinese market, about 2 million tons of lotus root/year... From those positive signals, it shows that Vietnamese lotus root has many opportunities to expand its export to demanding markets. It is expected that from now until the end of the year, Dai Viet Sen Joint Stock Company will export 8 more containers of frozen lotus root to the Japanese market, worth about 7 billion VND. Currently, in addition to lotus root shipments exported to the Japanese market, the company is promoting with partners in Korea to prepare to export lotus root products to the land of Kim Chi.
Mr. Doan Thanh Binh - Chairman of Thap Muoi District People's Committee informed at the announcement ceremony that lotus is a typical product with the brand of Dong Thap province, with high economic value and potential for tourism development. This is also one of the key industries implemented in the province's Agricultural Restructuring Project. Lotus is widely grown in localities in the province. In particular, it is most concentrated in the districts of Thap Muoi, Cao Lanh, Chau Thanh, Tan Hong, Tam Nong.... In particular, Thap Muoi district is the locality with lotus growing area accounting for more than 30% of the lotus area of the whole province (equivalent to 525 hectares). The event of the announcement ceremony of exporting lotus root to the Japanese market is of great significance to the government, businesses and people of Thap Muoi district in particular and Dong Thap province in general when the local agricultural product has many opportunities to penetrate demanding markets in the world.

According to the People's Committee of Thap Muoi district, in recent times, in order to help local farmers create a diverse source of raw materials from lotus plants to increase income, meet the processing and export needs of enterprises, the district has piloted a model of growing lotus roots on an area of 3 hectares in Truong Xuan commune, Thap Muoi district. Initially, there have been certain successes, providing a source of high-quality lotus roots to meet the export requirements to foreign markets. Currently, the model of growing lotus roots is continuing to be replicated in some areas in the district.
