On July 30, the People's Committee of Cao Lanh Ward ( Dong Thap Province) announced that the 205th death anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Do Cong Tuong will take place from July 30 to August 3 (the 6th to 10th of the 6th lunar month, the year of At Ty).
The death anniversary ceremony was organized by the People's Committee of Cao Lanh Ward with many rich activities imbued with traditional cultural identity, combining spiritual, folk and tourism elements.
The center of the festival is the Temple and Tomb of the Grandfather and Grandmother on Le Loi Street, a place associated with many generations of local people. The memorial space is expanded with activities such as: Cultural space of the Countryside, reenactment of the old Garden of Mandarin market, tea ceremony, “Hundred years of origin” lantern festival, chess competition, lion-lion-dragon performance, OCOP product display and talks on the merits of the Grandfather and Grandmother.
According to Mr. Bui Quoc Nam, Chairman of Cao Lanh Ward People's Committee, the death anniversary aims to educate about tradition, create conditions for people to express their respect and remember the contributions of Mr. and Mrs. Do Cong Tuong, who had the merit of reclaiming wasteland, establishing markets and devoted themselves to the people.
Historical documents record that Mr. and Mrs. Do Cong Tuong from the Central region settled in My Tra village during the reign of King Gia Long. Not only did they set up a market to help people trade, they also voluntarily sacrificed their lives during an epidemic in 1820 to pray for the people's safety. Since then, people have built a temple to worship them and held an annual memorial service.
In 2019, the Temple and Tomb of Mr. and Mrs. were ranked as a National Historical and Cultural Relic. For many people, especially traders at Cao Lanh Market, the anniversary of Mr. and Mrs.'s death is an occasion to offer incense and pray for good business and family peace.
The death anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Do Cong Tuong is a typical cultural and spiritual event of Dong Thap, demonstrating the morality of "When drinking water, remember its source" and spreading the deep value of gratitude through each generation.
