(CLO) The United Kingdom will officially introduce the ETA entry system from January 8th. This is a new online application program for visitors who do not require a visa to enter the UK.
While previously visa-exempt travelers could board the plane and present themselves at the passport control counter upon landing, under new ETA regulations, they will now need to apply for permission before flying to the UK.
Who needs ETA?
Anyone who doesn't need a visa to travel to the UK will soon need an ETA – an "electronic travel authorization" that allows you to enter the country before traveling. This is the equivalent of the US ESTA – a mandatory, paid travel permit, with a security clearance obtained beforehand.

This program will be rolled out to Gulf Cooperation Council citizens in 2024, with subsequent phases to include other non-European travelers. A full list of the 48 countries requiring an ETA can be found here.
Visitors from these countries will need an ETA to enter the UK from January 8th. The only exception is EU citizens, who will only need an ETA to enter the UK from April 2nd, 2025.
Is this a visa, and what is the procedure?
Although some people call this a visa, it is actually a visa-free entry. Visitors from countries requiring a visa to enter the UK will still need to apply for one. (However, they will not need to apply for an additional ETA).
The ETA registration fee is £10 and is non-refundable (approximately $12.50). Visitors can register through the official app listed on the UK Government website. Apps for iPhone and Android are processed in approximately 10 minutes.
Having an ETA does not guarantee entry into the United Kingdom. Visitors are still subject to passport checks, and Border Force officials still have the final say on whether or not you are granted entry into the country.
