On August 1, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism, Ho Chi Minh City Tourism Association, and Ho Chi Minh City Tour Guide Association organized a seminar on "Ho Chi Minh City - Imprints after the merger".

This topic aims to update knowledge, share experiences and provide professional guidance for tour guides in the context of the city having just completed the arrangement of 168 communes, wards and towns.

Tour guides have many advantages but also many difficulties.

Speaking at a seminar for tour guides, Ms. Bui Thi Ngoc Hieu, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism, gave a general view of the attractiveness of Ho Chi Minh City in the new space.

These include: increasing tourism resource areas with many unique and rich destinations; restructuring tourism spaces, developing inter-regional routes and points; facilitating the development of more diverse and higher-quality tourism products...

As for tour guiding, Ms. Hieu believes that this is an opportunity for tour guides to expand their understanding of new cultural, historical, and geographical spaces...

"Enhancing the ability to design and lead inter-regional, long-term, in-depth tours; accessing newly invested and upgraded destinations, opening up more job opportunities," said Ms. Hieu.

However, she also noted that the merger process will bring about certain changes, especially in administrative place names; updating tourism records and documents; coordinating routes...

"The change of district and commune names, both tourists and tour guides need to be updated to avoid incorrect information when explaining. Content about history, geography, and administration needs to be supplemented and adjusted to suit the new reality.

And in route coordination, some traditional tours may change their routes or adjust their duration, because changes in administrative boundaries will affect travel time, costs, and organization," Ms. Hieu explained.

Encourage tour guides to accompany in tourism product development

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism, the tour guide team is one of the pioneering forces that inspires and brings the image of the city in particular and Vietnam in general closer to international friends.

Therefore, the leaders of the city's Department of Tourism set out recommendations and directions for tour guides in the new context.

For example, increasing the update of official information from state management agencies; participating in training and specialized training on newly merged areas, including: knowledge of culture, history, ethnology, new routes, etc.

In addition, the department encourages tour guides to apply technology and skills to exploit new destinations in districts and communes with tourism potential such as E-learning, digital maps, digital destination data; coordinate with travel businesses to redesign tour products, in which tour guides play the role of a bridge between destinations, organizers, tourists, etc.

Aiming for sustainable tourism development, also sets out sustainable development orientation for tour guide team.

"The priority is to support tour guides to participate in green tourism, community tourism, and responsible tourism activities. At the same time, create a mechanism to encourage tour guides to accompany in developing new tourism products, associated with the conservation of resources and cultural heritage," said a representative of the tourism management department.

Ho Chi Minh City after merger has nearly 10,000 tour guides

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism, the city has 7,211 tourism service businesses. Of these, 1,815 are travel agencies and 5,396 accommodation establishments with 92,468 rooms and 9,540 tour guides.
