Maintain and develop the amateur music movement

Don ca tai tu is the breath and the soul of the people of the South. In the flow of the times, there are still many people who are active, maintaining it daily, weekly or monthly in hamlets, communes, community learning centers... Thanks to that, they have a place to exchange and learn, satisfying their passion through each lyric and melody.

In Phu Tan district, the amateur music movement is maintained by clubs. Every day, amateur music lovers in Phu My town always gather together at the side of the market center. They sing and practice systematically, considering this a way for everyone to create joy and excitement to start a new day. The older uncles and aunts are very dedicated to teaching some young children who have a passion for the art, supporting them in competitions and performances, so that they have the opportunity to develop their talents.

In the new rural commune of Phu Hung, every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday evening, songs and melodies resound in a small corner of Hung Thoi 1 hamlet. The activities take place in a simple space, with only sound, television, and no instruments, but the artists always "burn" themselves out in every lyric, tone of the songs Nam, Bac, Oan, vong co and the ensemble... bringing viewers and listeners many overwhelming emotions.

Amateur music activities in the localities

Ms. Phan Thi Thu Thuy (Chairwoman of the Don ca tai tu Club of Hung Thoi 1 hamlet) said that she often participated in Don ca tai tu activities in localities inside and outside the district. Later, she wanted the Don ca tai tu movement in her hometown to develop, so she came up with the idea of establishing this club. After 2 years of operation, starting with a few members meeting in groups to sing together, it has now attracted about 20 members. In addition to satisfying their passion, they also help each other improve their techniques and practice singing.

The members hold regular weekly activities, bringing together both old and young artists. They put aside their worries and release them through singing. During the day, Ms. Tran Thi Phuong is a tailor, and at night she becomes an actress in the eyes of everyone. “Singing helps me relax after a tiring day at work and learn more about the traditional culture of my hometown. Nowadays, young people have many other entertainment options, so it is not easy to keep them interested in amateur music. But we still try to teach it so it does not fade away,” Ms. Phuong shared.

With the same intention of preserving the traditional music for the next generation, this art form has been developed and passed down through the training of many dedicated artists, such as Mr. Sau Lon (Long Xuyen City), Mr. Nam Suol (Tan Chau Town). Children from neighboring districts do not hesitate to travel far, taking advantage of the summer days to go to class, improving year after year. To help this art form develop more steadily, every year there are competitions, playgrounds, singing - dancing - music competitions on many different scales, expanding the opportunity for candidates to show their talents.

Like many other genres of folk music , Don Ca Tai Tu originates from everyday life, so it is very simple, close, and easy to create emotions for listeners. The beauty of Don Ca Tai Tu is the harmony of the sound of the piano keys and the lyrics of male and female amateurs. A good, smooth song is a harmonious combination of the singing and performing of both the Don Ca Tai Tu and the Tai Tu. This art form has been preserved and passed down from the daily lives of the people, gradually becoming an indispensable cultural and artistic movement. In recent times, the local government has always created conditions for the club to operate, such as supporting the venue for activities, organizing exchanges, competitions, etc.

Thanks to the activities of the clubs, despite the ups and downs, in the flow of today's era, Don Ca Tai Tu still has its own vitality, is not lost, and develops strongly from urban to rural areas. In the integration period, preserving this art form plays an increasingly important role, both continuing tradition and absorbing modernity. Today's songs not only express pride in love for the homeland, country, people... but also encourage and praise achievements in the process of building new rural areas, building cultural life, good people - good deeds. Besides, many songs praise leaders, the spirit of great national unity, building cultural life in the new era...

Don ca tai tu is an art form with a strong Southern identity, recognized by UNESCO as a representative intangible cultural heritage of humanity. Although not the “cradle” of don ca tai tu, the silent flow of talented music lovers in An Giang is no less exciting and intense. Over the years, generations of artisans have passed on their profession and passed on their passion for art to the next generation, creating a foundation for continued development.
