El Salvador to become home to criminal immigrants deported by the US

(CLO) El Salvador has proposed allowing dangerous criminals deported from the US to be held in the country's prisons.

This information was revealed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio after a nearly three-hour meeting with El Salvador President Nayib Bukele at his residence on the outskirts of the capital San Salvador.

On his first trip as US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio is seeking support from Central American countries to implement a policy of deporting large numbers of illegal immigrants from the US.

During a nearly three-hour meeting with President Bukele, the two sides reached an agreement to expand the scope of deportation, with El Salvador willing to detain criminals from other countries, not just its own citizens.

"Any illegal immigrant in the United States who is convicted of a dangerous crime – whether a member of MS-13, Tren de Aragua or any other criminal organization – will be sent to El Salvadoran prisons at the request of President Bukele," Rubio said.

In addition to stepping up deportation efforts, the Trump administration is pursuing agreements with third countries — countries that accept citizens from other countries if their home countries refuse to repatriate them.

Some countries, such as Cuba and Venezuela, have restricted their acceptance of deportees from the US, although Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has recently reportedly agreed to take back his country's citizens.

Notably, El Salvador has even offered to accept criminals who are US citizens or have legal permanent residency in the US, although it is unclear whether Washington will accept this proposal.

Immediately after Secretary of State Rubio's announcement, President Bukele posted on social network X, emphasizing that the proposal is an opportunity for "the United States to outsource part of the prison system."

"We are ready to receive convicted criminals (including US citizens) into El Salvador's maximum security prisons, on condition that the US pays the fee," Mr. Bukele said, referring to the country's Terrorist Detention Center.

He also stressed that the fee the US would have to pay would not be too high, but would still be enough to help El Salvador maintain and operate its prison system sustainably.

The Trump administration sees Mr. Bukele as a key partner in its efforts to control immigration in Latin America. Under Mr. Bukele, El Salvador has waged a fierce crackdown on crime, arresting more than 80,000 people and sharply reducing the murder rate.

Since taking office on January 20, 2025, Mr. Trump has stepped up deportation of immigrants, including using military aircraft to bring them back home.

In addition, the Trump administration has just revoked temporary protected status for hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans living in the US, paving the way for large-scale deportations.

In addition, last week, Mr. Trump also announced the expansion of the detention camp at the Guantanamo Bay naval base, Cuba, with plans to detain up to 30,000 people.
