On June 22, Can Tho Central General Hospital in collaboration with the Stroke Care Program - Angels Vietnam organized a National Stroke Nursing Conference on the topic "Emergency management of cerebral ischemic stroke". This is the first conference held in Can Tho City with the goal of improving professional capacity in receiving, handling, treating and caring for stroke patients.
The conference also had the participation of guests from Bach Mai Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, E Hospital and nearly 1,000 delegates from all over the country attending in person and online.
Stroke, also known as cerebrovascular accident, is a condition in which the brain is severely damaged due to the interruption or significant reduction of blood supply to the brain, causing the brain to lack oxygen and not enough nutrients to nourish the cells. If not re-perfused in time, every minute 2 million brain cells will die without recovery.
Stroke is the leading cause of death and disability worldwide. In Vietnam, with nearly 200,000 new stroke cases each year, it has become a burden on the health sector and society.
According to Specialist II Doctor Pham Thanh Phong - Deputy Director of Can Tho Central General Hospital, nurses are the first to receive patients, identify strokes and initiate stroke emergency procedures. In addition, they provide comprehensive care to patients after the critical stage, helping them overcome their illness and recover quickly.
"As a central hospital in the Mekong Delta region, the hospital has invested in modern equipment and technology, fully implemented techniques in stroke care and treatment, and is planning to open continuous training courses and scientific activities to improve the capacity in stroke treatment for doctors and nurses of medical facilities with stroke treatment units," said Dr. Phong.
Dr. Ha Tan Duc - Head of Stroke Department, Can Tho Central General Hospital - informed: Although stroke is becoming younger and is a concern for every family, there are still many people who ignore the signs of the disease, as well as relatives who are confused about how to handle it.
Therefore, doctors note that the signs of stroke are simple through the FAST rule (Face - Arm - Speech - Time). If relatives check for crooked mouth, weak limbs, abnormal speech, they should call emergency (115) for instructions or take the patient to the hospital that can provide the fastest stroke emergency. The golden hour for stroke emergency will help save the patient's life, minimize complications and help the patient recover quickly.
For nurses, Dr. Duc also noted the need to properly examine the patient, explain the upcoming procedure to the family, check pre-surgery, review signed consent forms, prepare the room... so that all work can take place safely and quickly.
