Inside the small house, incense smoke was still rising, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hang (67 years old) - Hoai's mother, hugged her grandchildren with tears in her eyes. She said that Hoai used to work as a construction worker in Laos, while Le was a worker from Gia Lai who came to the South to make a living. Simple love brought them together in early 2013. Returning to their hometown in Chap Nam village to live, Hoai continued to work as a construction worker in the area, while Le stayed home to take care of the children. Life was not very prosperous but warm and peaceful.
The first incident occurred in 2020, when Ms. Le was 7 months pregnant with her youngest child and suddenly became seriously ill. The doctor diagnosed her with pneumonia and blood infection, forcing an emergency cesarean section to save the fetus. Bao Viet was born prematurely and had to stay in an incubator for more than a month. Despite the dedicated treatment of doctors and nurses, Ms. Le still did not survive after more than two months of treatment.
After losing his wife, Mr. Hoai had to raise three children alone, the oldest only 7 years old, the youngest still in the cradle. But life did not spare this poor man. In early 2024, the doctor said he had end-stage cirrhosis. The long treatment in the hospital made his health deteriorate. However, for the sake of his children, he still tried to go to work when he could. Until May 13 - a seemingly normal day - he came home from work and had dinner with his children. Before he could lie down to rest, he suddenly vomited blood. His relatives took him to the emergency room that night. The next morning, he breathed his last.
The three children lost both their parents in less than 5 years. It was a shock that adults could hardly recover from, let alone the children who had just started school. Now, all three children have to rely on their grandmother. Mrs. Hang is entering her twilight years, her body is getting weaker by the day, and she is often sick. She is living with her unmarried second son, who works in the fields and as a hired laborer, about 4 km from the children's house.
For nearly a week, Mrs. Hang has been running back and forth between the two houses, cooking for her grandchildren, comforting and encouraging the three children who are confused by the emptiness. No matter how much she feels sorry for her grandchildren, she cannot hide her anxious eyes when thinking about the long future ahead. “I am old, I don’t have much longer to live. The children’s father is still too young, how can I worry about their education, food and clothing…”, she said in tears.
For now, Ms. Hang’s younger brother lives nearby and helps cook for the children. In the long term, Ms. Hang plans to bring all three children to live with her so that they can be taken care of more easily. Although the house next to her second son is simple and poor, at least there is still warmth and affection. It is better than letting the children live alone in a cold house where sad memories are still imprinted on every wall.
Chairman of Vinh Chap Commune People's Committee Vo Van Tuan said: "Hoai's children are facing great challenges in life. We sincerely hope that agencies, organizations and philanthropists will join hands to contribute and share love so that the three children can soon overcome their loss, have the conditions to study and grow up to be good people. Spiritual and material support at this time is a flame of hope, a guiding light for the children on the challenging journey ahead."
