On June 5, the Dak Lak Department of Health announced that at the Central Highlands General Hospital, doctors successfully removed a foreign object, a leech, living parasitically in the airway of a child patient.
According to the Dak Lak Department of Health, on May 29, a child named YVN (5 years old, residing in Yang Mao commune, Krong Bong district, Dak Lak) was admitted to the General Pediatrics Department of the above hospital in a state of fever, coughing up a lot of phlegm, labored breathing, and had symptoms of coughing up blood for a week before.
Through examination, the doctor initially diagnosed the child with laryngotracheobronchitis, and did not rule out the possibility of a foreign object in the airway.

During the examination, the doctors unexpectedly discovered a living foreign object in the child's nose. Immediately after, the child was transferred to the Ear - Nose - Throat department and the foreign object, a live leech, was removed from the child's nose.
After the foreign object was removed, the patient's health stabilized. The hospital determined that the foreign object was the main cause of the patient's symptoms of coughing up blood, respiratory infection, and difficulty breathing for many days.
According to doctors from the Department of Pediatrics at the Central Highlands General Hospital, this case shows that children, especially in mountainous areas, exposed to the natural environment are at risk of having living foreign objects (such as leeches) enter their bodies through the nose or mouth.
Therefore, parents need to limit children from bathing in streams or drinking unsanitary water and closely monitor unusual signs to take children to medical facilities promptly to avoid dangerous complications.
