Coffee price today 5-5: Decoding the jackfruit coffee fever

Coffee prices are anxiously awaiting new prices after a long holiday, while specialty coffee experts are suddenly hunting for coffee that was once cut down.

Today, May 5, domestic coffee prices started at 129,900 VND/kg; Robusta on the London exchange - UK was 5,291 USD/ton and Arabica on the New York exchange - USA was 8,500 USD/ton, with the same delivery date in July 2025.

The harvest of jackfruit coffee (also known as Liberica or Exelsa) has basically ended with a record price of up to 23,000 VND/kg (red ripe). Jackfruit coffee is harvested after Arabica and Robusta coffee, usually after Tet and lasts until early May.

From about 10 kg of fresh coffee beans, 1 kg of green coffee beans are produced, so the cost of raw materials is equivalent to 230,000 VND/kg. Roasted and ground jackfruit coffee is currently priced higher than Arabica, from 600,000 - 1.2 million VND/kg.

This is very special because just a few years ago, jackfruit coffee was a low- economic crop when it was priced at only half of Arabica because it was only used as an ingredient for instant coffee, not for roasted and ground coffee.

Decoding the jackfruit coffee craze, Mr. Nguyen Tan Vinh, a specialty coffee expert, said that many organizations and individuals have applied the Arabica coffee processing method to jackfruit coffee, creating new "delicious" and "healthy" flavors.

Jackfruit coffee is very suitable for current coffee extraction methods and is sought after by coffee connoisseurs.

In particular, with limited quantity, jackfruit coffee prices are pushed up even higher due to low supply compared to demand.

In Vietnam, jackfruit coffee is currently concentrated in Quang Tri and previously farmers planted it mainly to preserve soil and create shade for Arabica trees because they are tall, strong, disease-free, drought-resistant, and require little or no fertilizer.

Some Central Highlands provinces previously had jackfruit coffee but they were cut down due to low economic efficiency and replaced with new coffee varieties or fruit trees.

Jackfruit coffee has the characteristic of a tall tree, up to 15 meters; jackfruit coffee beans have an average caffeine content of 1.2%-1.8%, higher than Arabica but lower than Robusta.
