According to Mr. Nguyen Van Hung, My Hoa commune, Ba Tri district, he has just raised more than 6,000m2 of his family's land to grow raw dry coconut. However, currently, the seedling shops are out of stock, and we have to wait more than half a month for more. In addition, the selling price of coconut seeds has increased by more than 2 times compared to last year.
Mr. Hung said that last year he bought coconut seedlings for 20,000 VND/tree, this year the price has increased to 45,000 VND/tree. Currently, he has to book in advance with the seedling seller because he is worried that the price of coconut seedlings will continue to increase.
Mr. Hung shared that he realized that the land was suitable for coconut trees, so he changed his production. However, he was worried about whether the coconut seeds he bought for planting would be of good quality or not. He found a reputable facility that did not have enough coconut seeds and the price was high.
Ms. Vo Thi Phuc, Binh Thanh commune, Giong Trom district said that around her family's rice fields, people have planted coconut trees, so her family has to plant coconut trees as well. In addition, the current high price of coconut trees makes it attractive for farmers to convert. However, people want to find a source of good coconut trees to plant, avoiding the risk of planting the wrong variety and the coconut trees will not produce good quality fruit.
According to Mrs. Phuc, she goes to coconut gardens with quality fruits to buy seeds to grow herself because the source of seeds outside the market is currently scarce. The price to buy coconuts to grow is 20 thousand VND/fruit. However, if she grows them herself, the growth rate will not be high, it will take an additional 5-6 months to have coconut seeds to plant.
Mr. Nguyen Van Nam, owner of a seedling shop in Giong Trom district, said that the current price of coconuts has increased. If he buys them for growing, it will take 4-5 months for the seedlings to be available for sale on the market. He does not know what the price of coconut seedlings will be at that time. If the seedlings cannot be sold or the price drops, the seedling shop will lose money. Currently, Mr. Nam only starts production if a gardener places an order. On the other hand, to maintain the reputation of the shop, Mr. Nam does not buy seedlings from other places to sell, because he is concerned that the seedlings are not of guaranteed quality.
According to Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment Huynh Quang Duc, the whole province has about 80,000 hectares of coconut, mainly raw dry coconut, of which more than 21,000 hectares are produced in an organic direction. Currently, the price of raw dry coconut and fresh coconut is increasing sharply, creating a very good income for people. Coconut trees are currently the dominant tree for coping with drought and salinity, so farmers choose coconut trees to convert to the main crop. However, people need to pay attention to the stage of selecting seeds and choosing a quality seed supplier. Currently, the provincial agricultural sector has provided guidance and training for people to select seeds from quality mother coconut trees.
The provincial agricultural sector has researched the production of coconut seedlings using tissue culture methods, which results in high yield and quality of coconut seedlings, without crossbreeding. Initially, this method of producing coconut seedlings using tissue culture has produced favorable results, and there will be high quality coconut seedlings in the near future.
