According to many pig farmers in the Central region, prolonged heavy rains have flooded barns, creating conditions for respiratory and digestive diseases to break out, increasing the rate of pig loss.
In addition, due to landslides and traffic disruptions, the cost of transporting feed and breeding pigs has increased sharply, causing many obstacles for farmers in the process of herd restoration.
Mr. Nguyen Van Quy - farm owner in Quang Nam shared: "Healthy pigs are now sold for only a few tens of thousands of dong per pig. With the current price of 50,000 - 52,000 VND/kg, many households have had to temporarily stop re-herding to avoid the risk of losing capital."
According to a report from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the price of live pigs in Vietnam is currently about 10,000 VND/kg higher than in China, causing informal export activities to this market to almost stagnate.
Experts say pork consumption demand could increase by 10-15% in the fourth quarter and during the 2026 Lunar New Year, but many farmers are still cautious about restocking due to concerns about disease and selling prices lower than the break-even point.
