Gia Lai: Heavy rain and high tides, 8 schools were deeply flooded

Over the past few days, heavy rains have occurred in Gia Lai province, causing flooding and landslides in many places. Many schools were flooded, forcing thousands of students to temporarily stay home from school.

On October 30, heavy rain combined with rising tides caused many low-lying residential areas in Tuy Phuoc Dong and Ngo May communes to be partially flooded.

In Tuy Phuoc Dong commune, schools including Tuy Phuoc High School No. 3, Phuoc Hoa Middle School, Phuoc Thang Middle School, Phuoc Thang Primary School No. 2, Phuoc Hoa Primary School No. 1 and Phuoc Thang Kindergarten... were flooded, many roads in the area were temporarily cut off.

Mr. Duong Minh Tan, Chairman of Tuy Phuoc Dong Commune People's Committee, said that due to heavy rain, water from upstream poured in quickly, causing spillways and school areas to be deeply flooded. To ensure safety, the locality has temporarily closed more than 3,000 students at 8 schools on October 30.

According to Mr. Tan, on October 30, the rain had reduced and the flooded residential areas began to drain. “The water has gradually receded, and if the weather is stable, students will return to class tomorrow (October 31),” said Mr. Tan.

Heavy rain combined with high tides caused severe flooding in many residential areas in Tuy Phuoc Dong, including Lac Dien, An Loi, and Kim Dong villages, with some areas being flooded up to 1 meter deep, isolating hundreds of households. According to statistics from the Tuy Phuoc Dong Commune People's Committee, more than 3,000 people were affected and isolated by the floods.

Heavy rains also caused landslides and the risk of landslides in many localities. Some high-risk mountainous areas such as Ganh Mountain (De Gi Commune), Tra Cong Mountain (An Hoa Commune) and Ia Ly Commune have been put on warning, and nearly 100 people have been evacuated to safety.

In Vinh Thanh commune, the authorities mobilized forces to fix 6 landslides, with about 47m³ of rock and soil spilling onto the road; traffic has now been cleared.
