Exports hit record high, China is key market
According to statistics from the Customs Department, durian exports in the first 9 months of 2025 reached nearly 2.77 billion USD. Notably, in September alone, the turnover skyrocketed to 972 million USD, up 44.6% over the same period in 2024 and setting a new record for a month.
The Chinese market continues to play a leading role, accounting for 98.8% of the total turnover in September with a value of 960 million USD. In the first 9 months, exports to this market reached 2.59 billion USD, accounting for 93.6% of Vietnam's total durian export turnover.
Impressive growth in new markets
Besides China, durian exports to other markets also recorded strong growth:
- Hong Kong: Up 83.7% to $42.8 million.
- Taiwan: Up 64.9%, reaching 32 million USD.
- Papua New Guinea: Up 44.6%.
- US: Up 36.5%.
- Malaysia: Up more than 650%.
In contrast, exports to Thailand, a major transit hub, fell 74.5% to just $33.9 million, reducing Thailand’s market share in Vietnam’s durian export structure from 4.7% to 1.2%.
Outlook and expert opinion
Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, commented that after a booming year, the Vietnamese durian industry is entering a period of competition in terms of quality and process standardization. He said that if Vietnam continues to expand the number of coded growing areas and invest in processing, it can maintain its leading position in the region and aim for a turnover target of 3.5 billion USD this year.
Export activities have returned to normal after a short interruption due to the temporary closure of some testing laboratories in Dak Lak for maintenance. Currently, about 300-400 durian trucks are cleared through customs at major border gates such as Lang Son , Lao Cai and Mong Cai every day, ensuring delivery progress.
