Domestic pepper prices updated on the morning of May 18, 2025

Experts say global pepper prices remain high due to limited post-harvest supplies and expectations of increased demand from the Middle East and Europe in the second quarter. However, the overall trend remains relatively stable or has slight fluctuations. Although prices have increased this year compared to the same period in 2024, new planting areas have not been expanded due to lack of land and farmers have switched to other crops.

Experts say that after the US announced its reciprocal tax policy, Vietnamese pepper is facing increasing competitive pressure from products from Brazil and Indonesia due to lower tax rates from these two countries. The current increase only ranges from 500 to 1,000 VND/kg and depends largely on exchange rates and logistics costs.

Farmers in Dak Nong province harvest pepper

Currently, Vietnamese pepper is under competitive pressure from Brazil and Indonesia, especially after the US applied a reciprocal tax policy. While Vietnam's pepper tax in this market remained at 10% in the second quarter, expected to increase to 25-30% in the third quarter, rival countries are enjoying lower tax rates, causing great disadvantages for export enterprises.

Faced with unpredictable market developments, the Government has assigned the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment to coordinate with the Ministry of Finance and relevant agencies to study solutions to support the temporary purchase and storage of agricultural products that are prone to falling prices such as rice, coffee, and pepper, in order to stabilize farmers' income during the peak harvest season.

At the same time, ministries, branches and localities are required to closely follow global trade developments, proactively and flexibly manage, and promptly provide information to businesses to effectively deal with challenges from international trade instability.
