Last week, the world oil market witnessed mixed sessions of ups and downs, between concerns about India-Pakistan tensions and supply, along with optimism about trade negotiations. Overall, world oil prices increased by more than 4% for the week, marking the first weekly increase since mid-April.
In the first session of the week on May 5, oil prices fell to their lowest level in more than 4 years, due to the decision to accelerate the rate of production increase by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its allied oil-producing countries, also known as OPEC+, which raised concerns about the possibility of increased supply while the demand outlook is uncertain.
Oil prices gained ground on Thursday, buoyed by a series of positive signs for the market, including higher demand in Europe and China, the prospect of lower U.S. production, tensions in the Middle East and renewed buying activity after prices fell to their lowest in more than four years.
Analysts at energy consultancy Ritterbusch and Associates said the market may be seeing some bottom-fishing activity as oil prices fall, a key factor contributing to the recovery in oil prices this session.
After falling in the session on May 7, oil prices rose sharply by about 3% in the session on May 8, thanks to hopes of new progress in trade negotiations between the US and China - the world's two largest oil consuming countries. According to expert Ole Hvalbye of SEB bank, the optimistic sentiment surrounding the negotiations between the US and China is supporting oil prices.
Oil prices continued to rise nearly 2% in the last session of the week on May 10 after the US-UK trade agreement made investors more optimistic ahead of negotiations between senior officials from the US and China.
