The Lo River Victory Relic is located at the confluence of the Lo River and the Chay River in Doan Hung District. This is a relic marking an important historical milestone for the army and people of Doan Hung in the historic Lo River Victory in 1947.
Lo River Victory Monument.
In 1947, after pacifying some areas in the plains and midlands of the North, the French colonialists launched a large-scale attack on Viet Bac to destroy the headquarters, destroy our main force, destroy the resistance base, end the war of aggression against Vietnam, and at the same time lock the Vietnam-China border, preventing communication between us and the international community. The enemy's attack was deployed along Highway 4 and Song Lo Road, forming two large pincers from the East and the West to clamp down on the Viet Bac revolutionary base.
Faced with that situation, the Central Party Standing Committee issued a directive "Must break the winter offensive of the French invaders". On the Lo River front, the Command of the forces of Zone 10 (main force) coordinated with the militia and guerrillas of the provinces of Phu Tho, Yen Bai, Vinh Phuc, and Tuyen Quang to actively defend and prepare for combat. At Doan Hung, strong artillery was deployed at Chi Dam with a pilot combat plan applying the new tactic of "place close, shoot straight". At the same time, we arranged fake battlefields in the communes of Huu Do, Dai Nghia... to create a diversion. On October 24, 1947, a convoy of 5 enemy ships, supported by 6 aircraft, went down the Lo River from Tuyen Quang to rescue the troop ship from Hanoi that was being intercepted by us at Khoan Bo (Lap Thach - Vinh Phuc). When they reached Chi Dam (Doan Hung), they fell into our ambush. After nearly 6 hours of fierce fighting, our artillery sank 2 warships and damaged 2 others; 350 enemies and a large amount of weapons and ammunition were destroyed. The peaceful green Lo River became the grave of the invaders.
One of the artillery pieces our army used to sink French ships on the Lo River.
The victory on the Lo River at Doan Hung was of great significance: This was the resounding victory that opened the way for subsequent victories on the Lo River. From here, we moved from the stage of holding out to the stage of developing guerrilla warfare towards a general offensive to win victory.
Until now, after nearly 80 years, despite the ups and downs of history, the imprints of the people and the poetic, heroic river are forever imprinted in everyone's subconscious.
The Lo River Victory Monument has installed boards with QR codes so that people and tourists can easily look up information about the monument.
The Lo River Victory Relic in Doan Hung Town has been classified as a national historical relic of resistance according to Decision No. 2890/VH-QD dated September 27, 1997 of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (now the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism ). Currently, this relic is preserved by the local Party Committee, government and people, and is a destination for tourism, experience and education activities in the locality.
Comrade Ngo Quang Tuyen - Head of the Departmentof Education and Training of Doan Hung district said: Currently, at educational institutions in the district, many schools have had good and creative ways of using the Lo River Victory Monument in teaching national history, through in-class lessons and at the monument site. Teachers use information, images, and documents about the monument, create problematic situations to attract students' attention to participate in history lessons. Create conditions for students to have the opportunity to experience the reality of learning about the monument, thereby encouraging students to develop their self-study ability, expand their knowledge, and foster their love for their homeland and country...
Students and teachers from schools visit and study at the relic.
Along with bringing historical relics into local education, Doan Hung district has also implemented a number of solutions to connect the Lo River victory relic with the tourist route of the midland and mountainous region of the North.
Comrade Do Quoc Hung - Head of the district's Department of Culture, Science and Information shared: In order to fully exploit the potential and value of the Lo River Victory Relic in tourism development, Doan Hung district has implemented a number of solutions such as organizing a scientific workshop on promoting the value of the Lo River Victory Relic in Doan Hung, listening to the opinions of experts and scientists in preserving and promoting the values of the relic. Investing in and embellishing the complex of relic items; organizing the connection of the Lo River Victory Relic with nearby stops in the district such as the President Ho Chi Minh Memorial Relic Site, Ngoc Tan Communal House, tea and grapefruit farms, OCOP product display points, etc.
It can be seen that the Lo River Victory is not only the pride of the Vietnamese people in general and the Phu Tho army and people in particular, but also has educational value on the heroic revolutionary tradition for the Vietnamese generations today and tomorrow. Hopefully, in the coming years, the Lo River Victory Relic will be a notable destination in local education and tourism activities, attracting more resources to preserve the relic and develop the local economy, culture and society.
