Primary school teacher 'asks for laptop support', parents upset

According to the feedback from parents of class 4/3, Chuong Duong Primary School, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, on the day of the parents' meeting on September 14, Ms. H., the homeroom teacher of class 4/3, asked the class to support her with a laptop (notebook - reporter) worth 4 to 5 million, 1 document printer and 300,000 VND per month to support the nanny. After that, the parents commented that the printer was purchased in grade 3, so they contacted the old homeroom teacher to ask for it back for the class to use. At noon of the same day, she sent a message to the general zalo group (group) (group where only the group leader/deputy leader is allowed to send messages - the remaining parents are only allowed to read) with the following content:

11:25: "Yes, after the first class of the school year. PH has paid 29 PH. Currently, I have 14,500,000 VND (VND-PV). I gave Ms. BM 300k. I paid 500k to the KH fund. I have 13,700,000 VND. I bought a laptop, I told PH how much is left. And I would like to have this laptop too, PH".

12:23 to 14:52: She took pictures of 2 laptops and quoted a price of 5.5 million for a gray one and 11 million for a black one. She said, "I'll take the black one for 11 million to run data quickly - PH will support me with 6 million, I'll pay 5 million. Thank you PH."

On September 16, 2024, she continued to text with the content: "On Saturday, I asked PH to support a laptop for about 5.6 million. And I bought a laptop for 11 million, so I added 5 million. And this laptop is mine. Does PH agree?" Then she created a vote for agreeing and disagreeing for parents to vote.

Around 20:00 to 20:15, she locked the vote. Parents said that the group had 47 members, of which 26 parents agreed (both parents voted for 1 child), 3 parents disagreed, and 18 parents had no opinion.

She said: "Up to now, 26 people agree - 03 PH disagree - 09 PH have no opinion. If there are PH who disagree, I will not accept it, PH. I will buy it myself and use it myself. I also bought the printer myself, PH. I do not accept anything from PH. I sincerely thank PH".

Also according to the parents on September 17, 2024, at around 10:11 a.m., there was another text message with the following content: Last night and this morning, I received many messages and phone calls from PH begging me to accept the class's support. I would like to clarify my point of view that I do not accept it, PH. And I also do not have to prepare review outlines for the children. I agree on the review lesson and PH will review by himself. I thank PH. Okay, PH.

At 10:22 the next day, she texted back: "Last night I had a discussion with the class association's executive committee. Even though I didn't receive support from parents, (but PV) I still love and educate my children as usual. In the message, I also apologize for not (not - PV) being clear, I didn't prepare an outline but I still reviewed it for my children before the exam and parents must pay attention to and remind their children."

In addition, parents of class 4/3 also raised issues such as students saying that the teacher also sold food and drinks such as instant noodles, sausages, and soft drinks in the classroom (they ate and drank while doing their homework), and that she used her phone for the wrong purpose...

Parents said that her request for a laptop for herself was inappropriate, exceeded her authority, and violated the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, as the fund for the parents' representative committee can only be used to take care of students. The fact that she said she did not prepare outlines for students made parents feel that she was forcing them to meet her request.

Parents said that with the above incidents, they are very worried if Ms. H. continues to teach class 4/3. "As mothers and fathers, we are really afraid that our children will suffer psychological trauma, negative thinking, deviant behavior, and especially affect their learning process while this school year is the most difficult foundation of the entire elementary level," the parents wrote in the petition letter sent on September 20, 2024 to the Principal of Chuong Duong Elementary School, District 1.

At the same time, parents proposed to the school a plan to change the homeroom teacher of class 4/3; or transfer all students that parents feel insecure about to another class.

As far as we know, on September 24, at the teachers' room of Chuong Duong Primary School, District 1, a meeting took place between parents of students in class 4/3 (with 27 parents participating); Mr. Le Cong Minh, Principal of the school; Ms. H., homeroom teacher of class 4/3.

This morning, September 28, Thanh Nien Newspaper reporters contacted Mr. Le Cong Minh, Principal of Chuong Duong Primary School, District 1, to get answers to all the above reflections. Mr. Minh said that today is Saturday, the primary school is closed, he made an appointment with reporters on Monday morning (September 30) to meet directly at the school to answer. Mr. Minh added that he is focusing on making a report to send to the Department of Education and Training.
