Keep the sea blue - keep the source of life

The beaches that were once full of trash are now cleaner, the fishing villages have less plastic waste, the fishing grounds are clear and abundant… these are the results of the community's cooperation, when each person sees keeping the ocean blue as keeping their own source of life.

For over a year, on the small road leading to the sea in Lo 3 fishing village (Hoa Hiep ward), the “green houses” located among the colorful flower bushes have become a familiar place for people to recycle their trash. People consciously sort and collect plastic bottles and nylon bags to put in here to keep the sea cleaner every day.

Youth Union members of Hoa Hiep ward participate in cleaning the beach.

With the support of organizations and the enthusiasm of the Women's Union of Phu Tho 3, nearly ten "green houses" and dozens of plastic trash cans have been set up, reminding people to throw trash in the right place, join hands to protect the sea and preserve the environment. Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai, Head of the Women's Union of Phu Tho 3, said: "Now every household and every person is aware of keeping the coast and residential area clean. Trash is classified and disposed of in the right place, there is no longer littering in the environment, the beach is increasingly clean and beautiful, the quality of life is increasingly improved".

Not only sorting waste at source, many localities have also actively implemented environmental protection activities in the community. In particular, the "Green Sunday" movement has become a familiar lifestyle in many coastal communes and wards. Every week, every month, on Sunday mornings, young people, women... gather with gloves, net bags... to clean up the beach and coastal tourist spots together. Thereby, many black spots of waste have been removed and more importantly, environmental protection awareness has spread throughout the community.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Rin, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Hoa Hiep Ward and Secretary of the Hoa Hiep Ward Youth Union, shared: “With the goal of preserving the marine environment, the Ward Youth Union has implemented the program "Green Youth - Preserving the Blue Ocean". Up to now, the Ward Youth Union has organized 3 clean-up campaigns along the coast of Phu Tho 1, Phu Tho 2, Phu Tho 3 neighborhoods with more than 1,300 members participating. Along with cleaning the coast, we also organize community games so that members can better understand each person's responsibility in joining hands to protect the environment."

Coming to Nhon Hoi fishing village (O Loan commune) today, visitors can easily see the fishermen's basket boats neatly arranged, the beach is free of rubbish, and Hon Yen is cool in the afternoon sun in the distance. Since the locals joined hands to keep the beach clean, rubbish is regularly collected, and the national scenic spot Hon Yen has attracted more and more tourists. Thanks to that, the people of the fishing village have more income from the service of taking tourists to Hon Yen. "Indeed, when we love and protect nature, nature will give us blessings," said Nguyen Tan Long, a local resident.

In fishing villages, since fishermen have gotten into the habit of bringing trash ashore, coastal and offshore areas have gradually seen less trash, and the sea has become clearer and cleaner. According to the Department of Environmental Protection, since 2024, the Fishermen Bringing Trash to Shore model has been implemented, attracting 434 fishing vessels to participate and sign a commitment. These fishing vessels have together collected and brought more than 5.3 tons of trash from the sea to shore...

Nguyen Huu Bi, Head of Phu Tho 3 Ward, said: "For more than a year, since the local government and people started paying attention to keeping the environment clean, more and more tourists have come to the fishing village to experience the simple, clean beauty of the fishing village."

It is the strong participation of the whole community that has brought a new look to the coastal fishing villages of the province. It is not only a change in the landscape, but also a change in the awareness, lifestyle and aspirations of the people. Keeping the blue sea is keeping the source of life today and entrusting the future to future generations.
