Before the time when pork consumption demand increases sharply during the Lunar New Year 2026, the provincial authorities warned of the risk of disease and market risks, and recommended that farmers need to calculate carefully before re-herding.

Mr. Nguyen Truong Giang, Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries of Dong Nai Province, said that although the epidemic is under control, with the province's large pig herd (about 4.2 million pigs) and the rate of household farming still high, farmers need to be cautious.

“It is not advisable to restock massively at this time as it carries many potential risks, especially in facilities that do not ensure biosecurity. Farmers need to carefully evaluate disease prevention conditions and breeds before making a decision,” Mr. Giang emphasized.

From a market perspective, experts say that although demand at the end of the year increases, it does not mean that prices will increase dramatically. With the current pig herd, Dong Nai can still meet the consumption demand during Tet in the province, the southern market and especially Ho Chi Minh City. This is also the intersection point that makes many farmers have to consider between profit expectations and cost risks.

Mr. Nguyen Tri Cong, Chairman of the Dong Nai Livestock Association, said that the pressure on input costs is currently very high, from breeding animals to feed and veterinary medicine. “Many small-scale households are facing difficulties in capital and disease management capacity. Expanding the herd should only be done when biosecurity is truly controlled and there is a clear financial plan. The current trend is to maintain a stable herd and improve quality instead of increasing quantity at all costs,” said Mr. Cong.
