According to CNBC , Google had developed an AI chatbot application for Gen Z users, integrating interactive digital characters. However, during an internal restructuring, the project was de-prioritized. Usually, when this situation occurs, the project will be terminated.
CNBC reported that the project will start in the fourth quarter of 2021. The project description claims that the chatbots’ human-like conversations will appeal to Gen Z. They rely on large language models to understand requests and respond. In one example, the chatbot engages in a conversation with a user, asks them questions in return, and even offers emotional advice.
The Gen Z AI chatbot is among a number of AI projects that have used Google’s large language model in recent months. After the ChatGPT chatbot launched in late 2022, Google leadership prioritized Bard, a similar AI assistant. Some members of the Bubble Characters team were asked to take a break to focus on Bard.
Meanwhile, several of Google’s top AI researchers have left the company to start their own startups, attracting a fair amount of investment. For example, Character.AI, a two-year-old collaborative chatbot startup founded by former Googlers Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, raised $150 million in a funding round led by venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz in February.
