Google pledges $37 million to develop multidisciplinary AI in Africa

Google's investment is allocated to food security, AI education, language diversity and research, helping Africa leverage artificial intelligence technology to address development challenges.

Recently, Google has pledged $37 million to support the development of artificial intelligence (AI) in Africa, focusing on agriculture , education, language and research.

According to a VNA correspondent in Africa, the majority of the money, about 25 million USD, will be allocated to the AI ​​Collaborative Food Security Initiative to help African farmers develop tools to predict hunger, increase climate resilience and improve crop yields.

Additionally, $7 million will be invested in AI education in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa, including 100,000 Google Career Certificate scholarships to build a workforce capable of leading, rather than just receiving, AI innovation.

Alongside this is a $3 million grant to the Masakhane African AI Language Hub, which is developing AI tools for more than 40 languages, ensuring Africa’s linguistic diversity is represented in global systems.

The final $2 million in the commitment will be spent on two research grants of $1 million each, awarded through the University of Pretoria’s AfriDSAI and the Wits MIND Institute to support postgraduate students as well as projects that integrate African development into global AI research.

Google said the initiatives reflect Africa's shift from "technology consumption" to "technology creation" and help position the continent to lead the next wave of global AI development.

According to Google's assessment, Africa has made significant improvements in technological capacity and has the potential to develop AI to address Africa's specific challenges through domestic solutions./.
