According to The Hacker News , Google's Threat Intelligence Group (TAG) has just announced a pro-China campaign called Glassbridge, which uses a network of fake news sites and news distribution services to amplify views that align with China's political stance and agenda.
TAG researchers said these fake news sites are operated by a number of digital media companies that provide news, distribution and marketing. They pose as independent news outlets, reposting articles from Chinese state media, press releases and content likely commissioned by their clients.
Google has removed thousands of fake news sites from China.
The fake news sites operated by Glasbridge illustrate how information actors have adopted methods beyond social media to try to spread China’s views. These networks can tailor content to specific regions and present views as news and editorial content that appears legitimate.
In parallel, Microsoft also announced a threat from China called Storm-2077. This group is said to use phishing emails to collect login information related to eDiscovery applications to exploit emails that may contain sensitive information. This attack is said to be active since at least January 2024, targeting the defense, aerospace, telecommunications, financial, and legal services industries worldwide .
