Starting September 25, hospitals in South Korea will be required to install surveillance cameras in operating rooms and record surgical procedures when patients are anesthetized or unconscious, and also in cases where patients or guardians request it.
According to the Ministry of Health , this revised Medical Services Law (passed from 2021) requires hospitals to store recorded image data for at least 30 days.
Violators will face fines of up to 5 million won ($3,741). The regulation is aimed at protecting patients from potential medical errors, Yonhap reported.
However, medical associations opposed the revised law, arguing that this unprecedented regulation in the world violates patients' personal rights, seriously damages trust between doctors and patients, and treats doctors as potential criminals.
