Cubana - Cuba's national airline - announced it will resume flights to Germany in November, marking its return to a destination it had not served for more than two decades.
According to Cuban Transport Minister Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila, the route with a frequency of two flights per week on Wednesdays and Saturdays will be operated on a modern Airbus A330-200 aircraft, with a capacity of 287 passengers, including 17 first class passengers and 270 economy class passengers.
Cuban officials said the new route is an important step in strengthening air connectivity between Cuba and Europe, the result of cooperation between Cubana and other international airlines, thereby enhancing the promotion of the Caribbean island as a safe, unique and sustainable destination, attracting more tourists interested in discovering its cultural and natural riches.
In December last year, German airline Cóndor announced the cancellation of direct flights from Frankfurt to Havana, Varadero and Holguín, a further blow to Cuba's struggling tourism industry.
Economic experts believe that Cubana's resumption of flights to Germany is to fill the gap left by Cóndor, in order to continue attracting European tourists.
According to data from the Cuban National Agency for Statistics and Information, the Caribbean island nation welcomed only 571,772 international visitors in the first quarter of 2025, a 29.7% decrease in the number of tourists compared to the same period in 2024, making it difficult for Cuba to meet its target of welcoming 2.6 million international visitors in 2025./.
