Sharing at the program "Golden Week - Nurturing Happiness" in 2025, the couple Nguyen Thi Tham (born in 1985) and Chu Van Cau (born in 1984), residing in My Duc district, Hanoi, could not hide their happiness with their little son, after 13 years of infertility, they had a child thanks to free in vitro fertilization (IVF) support.
Mr. Cau said that after many years of marriage, he and his wife had no children because he “had no sperm”. He fell into despair and depression, and advised his wife to end the marriage, but Ms. Tham did not agree and loved her husband even more. They always hoped that a “miracle” would appear. But 7 years passed, the child still had not arrived, with too much pressure from the family and Mr. Cau himself, in 2016, the couple divorced.
In 2019, in the middle of crowded Ho Chi Minh City, they accidentally met again and decided to return to each other, continuing their dream of "finding a child".

Also in that year, Ms. Tham read an article about the opportunity to have a “genuine” child for fathers with no sperm thanks to modern male medical methods. She and Mr. Cau went to the Hanoi Andrology and Infertility Hospital for a re-examination. The result was that Mr. Cau was still azoospermic, suspected to be due to blocked vas deferens or inability to produce sperm.
However, the doctor assessed that he still had the ability to become a father if he applied the technique of percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration, then performed IVF. The chance of success was 50-50.
But to do IVF, the couple must have a legal marriage certificate. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was not until April 2022 that they were able to complete this procedure in their hometown. Returning to the hospital right at the time of the “Golden Week” program, the couple began their free IVF journey. One day, the doctor announced: “Congratulations, you still have a chance to have children.”
“I felt like I was reborn, there was nothing happier than that moment,” Mr. Cau choked back tears as he recalled.
After 2 embryo transfers, the couple received the good news that Ms. Tham was pregnant. Their long and tearful journey ended with the birth of a healthy baby boy.
MSc. Dinh Huu Viet - Head of the Department of Andrology, Hanoi Andrology and Infertility Hospital said that Mr. Cau's case is typical of azoospermia due to obstruction. Thanks to the technique of percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration, doctors were able to aspirate sperm from the epididymis and successfully performed in vitro fertilization.
At the program, Nguyen Thi Hong Oanh and Nguyen Quang Thanh (living in Thanh Tri, Hanoi) emotionally shared that before having a healthy child, they had lost two children due to the genetic disease renal tubular dysplasia. Thinking that they would not be able to have children anymore, and the family was poor and did not have money for embryo screening and in vitro fertilization, they were even more desperate.

But luck came when they submitted their application and were approved for free testing of embryos carrying rare disease genes, the result was that they had completely healthy embryos. On the first embryo transfer, Ms. Oanh became pregnant. The dream of becoming a father and mother came after 9 months and 10 days, Ms. Oanh gave birth to a baby boy.
MSc. Dr. Le Thi Thu Hien - Professional Director of the Hospital said that from 2015 to April 2025, 67 families received 100% free support for IVF costs from the Golden Week - Nurturing Happiness program, 68 babies were born healthy, the rest are pregnant and in the process of reproductive support.
In 2025, the Hospital will continue to waive 100% of IVF costs for 10 disadvantaged couples across the country.
