Sharing their story at the "Golden Week - Nurturing Happiness" program in 2025, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tham (born in 1985) and Mr. Chu Van Cau (born in 1984), residing in My Duc district, Hanoi, could not hide their happiness with their young son. After 13 years of infertility, they finally had a child thanks to free in-vitro fertilization (IVF) support.
Mr. Cau said that after many years of marriage, he and his wife had no children because he "lacked sperm." He fell into despair and depression, advising his wife to end the marriage, but Ms. Tham disagreed and loved him even more. They always held onto hope that a "miracle" would happen. But 7 years passed, and still no children. With too much pressure from family and Mr. Cau himself, in 2016, the couple divorced.
In 2019, amidst the bustling city of Ho Chi Minh , they unexpectedly met again and decided to get back together, continuing their dream of "having a child."

Also that year, Thắm read an article about the opportunity for fathers without sperm to have their own children thanks to modern andrological methods. She and Cầu went to the Hanoi Andrology and Infertility Hospital for a check-up. The results showed that Cầu was still azoospermic, suspected to be due to blocked vas deferens or the inability to produce sperm.
However, the doctor assessed that he still has a chance of becoming a father if he undergoes percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration followed by IVF. The chances of success are 50-50.
But to undergo IVF, the couple needed a legally valid marriage certificate. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they only completed this procedure in their hometown in April 2022. Returning to the hospital during the "Golden Week" promotion, the couple began their free IVF journey. One day, the doctor announced: "Congratulations, you still have a chance to have children."
"It was like I was reborn; nothing could have made me happier than that moment," Mr. Cau recalled, his voice choked with emotion.
After two embryo transfers, the couple received joyful news: Thắm became pregnant. Their long and tearful journey culminated in the birth of a healthy baby boy.
According to Dr. Dinh Huu Viet, Head of the Andrology Department at the Hanoi Andrology and Infertility Hospital, Mr. Cau's case is a typical example of obstructive azoospermia. Thanks to the percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration technique, doctors were able to aspirate sperm from the epididymis and successfully perform in-vitro fertilization.
During the program, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Oanh and Mr. Nguyen Quang Thanh (residents of Thanh Tri, Hanoi) emotionally shared that before having their first healthy child, they had lost two children due to the effects of a genetic condition called renal tubular dysplasia. Thinking they could never have children again, and being poor and unable to afford embryo screening and in-vitro fertilization, they became even more desperate.

But luck came their way when they submitted their application and were approved for a free embryo testing for rare genetic disorders. The results showed they had perfectly healthy embryos. On the very first embryo transfer, Ms. Oanh became pregnant. Their dream of becoming parents came true after 9 months and 10 days, when Ms. Oanh gave birth to a baby boy.
According to MSc. Dr. Le Thi Thu Hien - Director of Professional Services at the hospital, from 2015 to April 2025, 67 families received 100% free support for IVF costs from the "Golden Week - Nurturing Happiness" program, 68 babies were born healthy, and the rest are pregnant or undergoing assisted reproductive procedures.
In 2025, the hospital will continue to provide 100% free IVF treatment for 10 underprivileged couples nationwide.
