Journey to restore smiles for unfortunate children

Behind the healthy smiles of children with cleft lip and palate is a long journey with countless silent efforts from doctors, families and the children themselves.

Recently, E Hospital in collaboration with Operation Smile continued to implement a program of free examination, treatment and surgery for children with cleft lip, palate and other facial deformities. This is the 10th time this humanitarian program has been held at E Hospital, providing opportunities to restore appearance and function to hundreds of children across the country.

The doctor is consulting the patient.

During the screening session that morning, the case of 12-year-old NTT moved many people. He had undergone 4 congenital heart surgeries, including 3 open surgeries, 1 vascular intervention, and 1 cleft lip and palate reconstruction.

Even though the family was poor and the father was seriously ill, the mother still took her child more than 300km to Hanoi , with the sole wish that her child would have the opportunity to receive free alveolar bone grafting.

After consultation and cardiovascular screening, the doctors decided to perform alveolar bone graft surgery for T. to prepare for the orthodontic stage and restore chewing function. According to Dr. Nguyen Hong Nhung, Department of Dentistry, E Hospital, this will help the patient soon integrate into normal life.

Also during the examination, baby H.D.A, only 3 months old, from Ha Tinh , was recorded as one of the youngest cases. During pregnancy, the baby's mother used antidepressants, which unfortunately affected the fetus, causing the baby to be born with a cleft lip and palate on the left side.

Breastfeeding becomes difficult, seriously affecting the baby's health and development. After screening, the baby was indicated for surgery to reconstruct the left lip, the first step in a long journey to help the baby grow up with a complete face and a confident smile.

The case of LHL, 9 years old, from Ninh Binh (formerly Ha Nam ) also received special attention from the medical team. She had a large pigmented tumor that occupied the entire left half of her face, causing her left eyelid to droop, her vision to decline and seriously affecting her appearance.

According to Dr. Nguyen Hong Nhung, the child's condition requires a long-term intervention plan, starting with initial surgeries to treat the inflamed, drooping eyelids, which directly affect vision.

Early intervention is aimed at avoiding vision complications and helping children to feel more psychologically and confidently when going to school. However, comprehensive plastic surgery will only be performed when the child is more mature, usually from 13 years of age and up, when the face has developed stably, to limit the risk of facial asymmetry and long-term aesthetic complications.

These are just three of dozens of cases that received free examination, consultation and surgery during this screening. According to Dr. Nguyen Cong Huu, Director of E Hospital, the program receives examination and consultation for children from 6 months old with cleft lip (minimum 6kg), from 12 months old with cleft palate (minimum 8kg) and many other congenital malformations at different ages, including lip scars, dental clefts, nasal malformations, palatal holes, etc.

Not only does the program provide free surgery and treatment, it also covers accommodation and part of the food costs during hospital stay, helping to reduce the financial burden on families in difficult circumstances.

“Each surgery not only helps change the appearance but also contributes to changing the lives, opening up a better future for children. We hope to spread the spirit of kindness and help more situations,” Dr. Huu shared.

The journey to restore smiles to children with disabilities is not simply a medical matter, but also a story of empathy, sharing and love. With skilled hands, kind hearts and a spirit of dedication, doctors are helping children born with misfortune every day to have the opportunity to live more confidently and fully in the future.
