The 2025/26 Premier League season has witnessed a rare phenomenon. The three newly promoted teams Leeds United, Burnley and Sunderland have accumulated 38 points after only 9 rounds. This is the second time in the history of the tournament (since the 1992/93 season with 44 points) that the newcomers have achieved such outstanding results in the early stages of the season.

Previously, the 2023/24 season saw 3 new players Burnley, Luton Town, Sheffield United earn only 10 points after 9 rounds. The 2024/25 season saw Ipswich Town, Leicester City, Southampton earn only 14 points after 9 rounds. As a result, the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons saw 100% of the new players relegated.

However, the current 38-point achievement not only helps Leeds, Burnley, and Sunderland increase their chances of staying in the league, but also breaks the "up and then down immediately" curse that has haunted Championship teams over the past decade.

If they maintain their current form, the three teams could even finish the season in a high position. After 9 rounds, Sunderland is 4th in the rankings, only 5 points behind the leading team Arsenal. With 17 points, the "Black Cats" even have a better start to the season than Man City, MU (all 16 points) and Liverpool (15 points).

According to statistics from Opta , Sunderland currently have a 7% chance of qualifying for the Champions League, which is not high. But most importantly, they only have a 6% chance of being relegated.

Burnley, with their resilient fighting spirit, are gradually consolidating their safe position on the rankings, ranking 16th (10 points after 9 rounds). Right above them is Leeds with 11 points.
