Bone and joint adjustment to treat spinal degeneration

VnExpressVnExpress14/08/2023

Ho Chi Minh City Mr. Hy, 66 years old, has pain in his lower back and cervical vertebrae, sometimes his muscles contract and he drops the bowl of rice he is eating on the ground.

He had been in pain for many years and often used painkillers to control the condition. Recently, the spasms became more frequent, he was in so much pain that he could not eat or sleep, and had difficulty in daily activities. A doctor at a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City requested surgery to treat cervical spondylosis and herniated discs, but he had a history of high blood pressure, so his family was concerned about the risks and wanted treatment without surgery.

On August 13, Dr. Calvin Q Trinh, Head of the Musculoskeletal Correction and Sports Medicine Unit, Hospital 1A, said that the patient had to use a wheelchair because of the pain and could not walk normally. After 4 times of musculoskeletal correction, the condition of painful joints and muscle contractions gradually improved.

"I no longer have to use a wheelchair, I can walk easily, the pain has reduced by 70%, which makes me very happy," said Mr. Hy. The doctor said he needs a few more sessions of exercise, and that consistent adjustment will maintain long-term results.

According to doctors, the elderly often face many diseases related to bones and joints, affecting the quality of life, including spinal degeneration. This is a condition of damage to the articular cartilage and intervertebral discs, forming bone spurs that compress the roots or spinal nerve cord, often occurring in areas that bear a lot of pressure such as the neck, nape, and lower back. The disease is very common today, increasing due to many causes such as incorrect living and working posture, sitting habits, lack of exercise, being overweight... The disease causes pain, numbness, paresthesia in the hands and feet, and can lead to paralysis...

To control pain, many people often have surgery or use drugs. In many European and American countries, many people choose musculoskeletal adjustment to treat many diseases such as neck and shoulder pain, osteoarthritis, herniated disc, upper cross syndrome...

In fact, joints are controlled by many different groups of small and large muscles, helping to move accurately or keep the joints in a neat position in a static state. When people perform work and daily activities, depending on the posture, the related muscle groups will work more strongly than the remaining groups. This leads to an imbalance between the muscles, causing muscle tension, muscle fatigue, creating uneven pressure on the joint surface, leading to joint deviation and compression causing pressure on the blood vessels and nerves... From there, the patient becomes painful, numb, tired, uncomfortable and loses energy.

Depending on the health condition of each patient, the doctor will choose the appropriate musculoskeletal correction method. This method has the ability to return the joints to their original position, eliminate concentrated pressure on one point, eliminate nerve and blood vessel compression as well as muscle tension and fatigue, helping the patient feel a significant change in comfort after a few sessions. Especially in the case of the elderly, a group of people prone to musculoskeletal problems, early intervention will significantly reduce the rate of surgery.

"Surgery should be the last option when conservative treatments fail and other methods have been tried without success," said Dr. Trinh. In some cases such as fractures, collapses, or vertebral fractures, the decision to operate is based on screening results to ensure maximum effectiveness for the patient.

The longer it is left untreated, the more serious the condition becomes, causing more damage to the spine and overall health, with the risk of lifelong disability. Doctors advise people who suspect they have spinal degeneration to see a specialist for proper treatment advice and not to use painkillers on their own.

To prevent this, people should avoid carrying heavy loads, pay attention to changing working positions every hour, do some light exercises between breaks, and be careful when playing high-impact sports to avoid the risk of spinal injury. Eat a nutritious diet, drink plenty of water, limit stimulants, and maintain a reasonable weight.
