Effectiveness of the VIETGAP cassava growing model

These days, on the cassava hills of Then Thau village (Khun Ha commune), the harvest atmosphere is more bustling than ever. Everyone is excited because the yield and output of this year's cassava crop are higher than in previous years.

Giang Thi Sung’s family is one of the households participating in the model of growing cassava according to VietGap standards. Thanks to the staff’s guidance on the technical process from land preparation, seed selection, care to harvest, this year’s cassava crop, Ms. Sung’s family achieved results far beyond expectations.

It is known that in the past, people in Then Thau village mainly planted short-term crops with low economic efficiency. Realizing the potential of the land of the village, this year, Khun Ha commune coordinated with the Plant Resources Center to choose Then Thau village as a point to deploy the model of growing cassava according to VietGAP standards with a total area of 4 hectares. Participating in planting, people were guided on techniques and supported with fertilizers. Thanks to the correct application of technical processes, the plants grew well, had few pests and diseases, and the average yield reached 60-65 tons/ha (10% higher than previous crops).

Not only does it bring about a bumper crop, the model of growing cassava according to VIETGAP standards also helps people change their production habits, know how to apply science and technology to cultivation, reduce the use of chemical fertilizers, and move towards cleaner, safer and more sustainable production. This is considered an important step in the transition from small-scale production to high-quality agricultural products, in line with the current trend of sustainable development.

According to the assessment of Khun Ha commune authorities, the model of growing cassava according to VIETGAP standards not only helps increase productivity, but also contributes to changing people's production mindset from fragmented and spontaneous to concentrated, planned production linked to the consumer market.

Along with building a synchronous production process, Khun Ha commune has coordinated with cooperatives and businesses to link product consumption, helping people feel secure in production, avoiding the situation of "good harvest, low price".

From the lush green cassava hills to the busy trucks carrying agricultural products for consumption... it is clear to see a strong change in the thinking of the people. People no longer wait for or rely on the support of the State but proactively learn and boldly apply scientific and technical advances in production. The successful cassava growing model according to VietGap standards not only helps people increase their income and improve their lives, but also proves the effectiveness of the connection between the government, businesses and people in building a clean and sustainable agriculture.
