The cause is largely due to the misuse of AI translation apps like Papago and ChatGPT.
According to the 2024 National Assessment of Educational Achievement, only 61.3% of ninth graders were highly motivated to learn English, down 2.5 percentage points from 2023. The proportion of students who rated English as a “very important” subject also dropped from 73.1% to 69.6%.
Many teachers are finding that students are using AI to complete assignments instead of trying to learn on their own. More and more middle school students are asking, “Do I need to learn English anymore?” when AI tools can translate and write for them. Even students who expressed interest after traveling abroad are relying on technology instead of practicing real-world skills.
“English in Korea has always been a subject for exams, not for actual use,” an education ministry official warned. “When AI makes things easier, students who lack confidence will be the first to give up, widening the learning gap.”
The development of AI is posing a major challenge to the education sector in maintaining and strengthening students' language learning motivation in the age of automation technology.
