Symposium on implementing the Plan to replicate the model of converting rice production from 3 crops to 2 crops/year in Ninh Thuan province

On August 14, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development held a conference to deploy the Plan to replicate the model of converting rice production from 3 crops to 2 crops/year in the province. Comrade Trinh Minh Hoang, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee attended and directed the conference.

The conference aims to specifically assess the effectiveness of the conversion as well as point out difficulties and shortcomings in implementation in order to propose appropriate solutions to promote production conversion, bring economic value associated with environmental protection, adapt to climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to the implementation of international commitments that Vietnam has signed.

According to the report of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, after more than four years of implementing the Plan to replicate the model of converting rice production from 3 crops to 2 crops/year, certain results have been achieved, contributing to increasing the production value of the agricultural, forestry and fishery sectors, increasing by an average of 5.12%/year, the efficiency of rice production of 2 crops/year increased by 4-12%, production costs decreased by 3-11% compared to rice production of 3 crops/year; the process of implementing the production conversion used high-quality certified rice varieties, along with the application of technical advances and advanced technology in the production process, which has brought efficiency to the people.

Besides the achieved results, the implementation process still has some difficulties and limitations such as: the implementation has not brought about practical results, people's awareness of production conversion has not changed clearly...

Through the results of the report, discussion and consultation at the Conference, the Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee agreed to continue implementing the conversion from 3-crop rice production to 2 crops/year for areas with difficulty in irrigation water, areas with pumped irrigation water to reduce production costs; for areas with proactive water (self-flowing water), it is agreed to review and consider 3-crop rice production/year to ensure suitability. The Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee also noted that the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, People's Committees of districts, cities and related agencies and units need to continue to promote propaganda about the objectives, significance and effectiveness of the model to raise people's awareness in order to create consensus and smooth implementation of the conversion from 3-crop rice production to 2 crops/year, as well as strengthen inspection and supervision to prevent people from sowing outside the plan, sowing late in the crop schedule... leading to damage to production./.
