This morning, June 26, more than 1.1 million candidates nationwide began taking the first subject of the 2025 high school graduation exam, literature, with a 120-minute test duration.
This is the first year that the high school graduation exam is organized according to the 2018 GeneralEducation Program, so the exam questions and review methods are of special interest to candidates.
In particular, the literature subject makes candidates most nervous when there is a big change in the question making process (shown through the sample test): no choice of materials from textbooks in both reading comprehension, social commentary and literary commentary.
"The test does not use materials from the textbook, but depending on the specific requirements of the test, candidates can still use both materials from and outside the textbook as examples and evidence for the arguments presented in the essay," noted Ms. Hoang Anh, a teacher at Chu Van An High School (Tay Ho District, Hanoi ). She also reminded candidates to find reliable sources when researching and choosing to use materials from social networks.
This year, Hanoi is the locality with the largest number of candidates taking the high school graduation exam in the country, with more than 124,000 candidates, an increase of over 15,000 compared to last year. The whole city has 233 exam sites, with nearly 5,000 exam rooms, including 4 exam sites specifically for students studying the 2006 program.

In Ho Chi Minh City, according to statistics from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, the whole city has 99,578 candidates registered for the exam, an increase of 8,891 students compared to 2024. Notably, the number of independent candidates this year increased by 5,000 students.
Of the total number of registered candidates, 97,940 are following the 2018 general education program and 1,638 are following the 2006 program.
The city organized 171 examination sites with 4,242 examination rooms, of which 168 sites were for candidates of the 2018 program (equivalent to 4,180 rooms), and 3 sites for candidates of the 2006 program (62 rooms). Each examination site was arranged with 3 additional spare rooms to handle situations that may arise during the exam.
To ensure exam security, all 171 exam sites will have surveillance cameras installed in the exam storage room, completed by June 19. The camera system will cover the entire exam storage area, fully recording all impacts on these items and continuously storing data, even in the event of a power outage...

At Nguyen Du Secondary School exam site, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, many candidates arrived early, happily getting to know friends and the exam site.
The students here are candidates taking the 2006 exam and are independent candidates.
Le Hoang Khang, born in 2004, said this was his second time taking the graduation exam so he was no longer nervous. "The first time I took the exam, I did not apply to any school. Then I did military service so now I have to retake the graduation exam for the second time to apply to the police academy" - Hoang Khang said.
Similarly, Ly Quoc Bang, from Hau Giang, also took the graduation exam for the second time to apply for admission to colleges and universities in the near future. "I have reviewed my lessons carefully, hoping I can do well on the test. Literature is not my forte, but I have tried very hard," Ly Quoc Bang said.
Also at this exam site, there was a candidate who had an accident and broke his leg after falling while taking the exam. Although he had to use his helmet to walk, he was very happy when he took the first exam, literature.
Nguyen Do Minh Trong said he fell last Thursday and hurt his leg, which affected his review, but he was still confident in taking this exam. "I'm a conscript soldier, so I don't think this pain will affect my exam," Trong said.
Nguyen Du Secondary School is an independent exam site, taking the exam according to the 2006 general education program. There are more than 300 candidates taking the exam. They will take the exam in 3 subjects: Literature, Math, Foreign Language and depending on that, they will take the optional exam such as the exam in natural science or social science.

On the morning of June 26, candidate Phan Ho Chau Anh, residing in Chu Pah district, Gia Lai, was taken by ambulance from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital - Hoang Anh Gia Lai from the hospital to the school gate to take part in the first exam. Chau Anh had a traffic accident on the morning of June 25. She suffered a crushed right ankle, broken bones, dislocated joints and torn extensor tendons. She was operated on and treated urgently by doctors to have enough health to take part in this year's exam. This morning, Chau Anh was allowed to change her bandage and take medicine early to get to the exam site on time.

At the testing sites in Son Dong district (Bac Giang), police, youth volunteers and staff were assigned to guide candidates to check their belongings, re-check their belongings, and absolutely not "miss" mobile phones, documents, smart devices, cameras, etc.
Mr. Nguyen Khac Khanh - head of the examination site at Son Dong High School No. 2 (Bac Giang) - said that the examination site has clearly assigned tasks at the "soft gate". This is where staff are present from 6:00 a.m. (morning) and 12:45 p.m. (afternoon) to remind students to bring all the required documents, pens, and study tools before entering the examination room.
In particular, Mr. Khanh noted that both staff and candidates are not allowed to bring phones, smart watches, etc. into the exam room.
According to Mr. Bach Dang Khoa - Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Bac Giang province, the department has directed the examination sites to ensure the best facilities, security and safety for candidates and to implement soft gates at school gates. At the exam site of Lac Long Quan High School (Khanh Vinh District, Khanh Hoa), parents and students arrived early to start the first exam, Literature.
This is the only examination site in this mountainous district, most of the candidates taking the exam at this site are ethnic minorities in the locality.
Anxiously taking his son to the exam site, Mr. Cao Van Tinh said he had been sleepless for the past few days as his son took on this important exam, hoping that his son would stay calm and do well on the exam.
Candidate Mau Thi Xuan Ngoc (Nguyen Thai Binh High School) shared: "This is the first year of taking the graduation exam according to the 2018 General Education program. I am also under a lot of pressure, but I am also ready and mentally prepared to complete the exam well."
In 2025, Khanh Hoa province has 14,780 candidates registering for the high school graduation exam.
Of which, 14,537 candidates took the 2018 General Education program, 243 candidates took the 2006 General Education program.

Festival 'Choosing university and college admission wishes 2025' in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi
The two festivals 'Choosing university and college admission wishes' in 2025, jointly organized by Tuoi Tre newspaper and the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training), will take place simultaneously in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi on July 19.
