Among the 3 Nguyen Dynasty throne artifacts protected this time, the most notable is the Duy Tan Emperor's throne - one of 33 artifacts that have just been recognized by the Prime Minister as a national treasure in the 13th batch (2024). The Duy Tan Emperor's throne is made of wood, lacquered and gilded, small in size but has special historical, cultural and artistic value.
The throne was specially made for King Duy Tan, the 11th emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty, who ascended the throne at the age of 7. The main decorative motif on the throne is the image of a 5-clawed dragon - a symbol of the emperor's authority, vividly depicted in many positions with techniques such as embossing, carving, painting and gilding. In addition, the image of a phoenix combined with a dragon creates a harmonious composition, demonstrating the typical aesthetic of the Nguyen Dynasty. Along with the throne of King Duy Tan, 2 other thrones from the reign of King Khai Dinh (reigning 1916 - 1925), painted red and gilded, have also been placed in a glass cabinet for protection.
The Hue Royal Antiquities Museum currently manages over 11,000 artifacts, of which 12 sets of artifacts are recognized as national treasures with 38 individual artifacts, most of which are on display for visitors. Mr. Ngo Van Minh, Director of the Hue Royal Antiquities Museum, said that the installation of glass cabinets is a consistent policy to prevent the risk of damage to artifacts and ensure the safety of treasures during display.
“Almost all the artifacts in the museum are protected in glass cages and recently the museum has added 3 more glass cages to protect 3 thrones of the Nguyen Dynasty, including one recognized as a national treasure, that of Duy Tan. In the coming time, the museum will have a plan to strengthen protection with full equipment and support tools according to regulations. In addition, other solutions are to strengthen the protective fences for large artifacts such as dragon beds and dragon palanquins.
