Hue, Quang Ngai, Da Nang brace for landslides

On November 19, heavy rain increased the risk of landslides, causing many highland villages in Da Nang, Quang Ngai, and Hue to be worried about landslides. Meanwhile, landslides in coastal areas became more severe.

Severe landslides from mountains to plains

In the early morning of November 19, 500 officers and soldiers of Military Region 5 were once again mobilized overnight to reinforce the An Luong embankment (Duy Nghia commune, Da Nang city) located downstream of the Thu Bon river. For nearly a month, landslides have continuously appeared on the riverbank for kilometers, forcing thousands of people to race against time to protect the bank.

Duy Nghia Commune authorities said that for a long time, hundreds of households in the coastal village have built houses close to the Thu Bon River, and the riverbanks have been reinforced with concrete embankments. However, heavy rains caused water from upstream to flow in since October 27, causing landslides to appear on the riverbanks. These spots have been continuously widened due to continuous rains during storms.

On November 19, heavy rain continued in the mountainous districts of Da Nang City, leaving residents and authorities exhausted. National Highway 14D had many serious landslides. Large amounts of rocks and soil were buried on the road, which was very dangerous.

In the border commune of La Êê, due to prolonged heavy rain, a serious subsidence appeared on the main road leading to the commune, with a length of nearly 200m.

Meanwhile, the severe landslide on Highway 40B also caused traffic congestion. In communes such as Hung Son, Tra Doc, Tra My... thousands of people still had to take shelter in schools and commune health stations to avoid landslides.

In the villages, on the damaged roads, the army and police force stood in the rain to prevent people from passing. Signs warning of the danger of landslides were also put up in many highland villages.

Move to where traffic flows

On November 19, Mr. Nguyen Phuc Nhan, Director of the Department of Construction of Quang Ngai province, said: "There are too many landslides, but with the spirit of "where there are landslides, urgently and make efforts to clear the road there", the province is mobilizing forces, ready for all situations. At all costs, landslides must not cause long-term separation and isolation."

The most important route of Quang Ngai province is National Highway 24, which connects the provincial capital with the entire western region (former Kon Tum province). In recent days, landslides have occurred continuously. Kon Tum Traffic Construction and Management Joint Stock Company has been assigned to handle the landslides.

The unit leader said: "We are concentrating our forces to prevent National Highway 24 from being blocked. There are many large landslides, and we have to work overnight to get traffic moving as soon as possible." Meanwhile, many provincial roads such as 623, DDH83... have continuously developed new landslides, with excavators and bulldozers working at full capacity to handle each spot.

In the communes, local forces also quickly took action when the road collapsed. For example, after the Nuoc Bao bridge (Son Ha commune, Quang Ngai) was swept away by floodwaters, the authorities and people joined hands to build a bamboo bridge, promptly transporting food and medicine to 1,200 people in two isolated villages.

In Ba Vi commune, Quang Ngai, landslides also destroyed the only road, leaving dozens of ethnic minority households unable to leave. In less than 24 hours, the commune police built a bamboo bridge over the landslide, and people no longer had to worry about shortages.

Hue urgently cleans up floods

By November 19, after many days of heavy rain, Hue City continued to concentrate forces to overcome the consequences of natural disasters and support people to stabilize their lives. By 8:00 a.m. on November 19, the entire city still had more than 700 houses flooded from 20 to 30 cm, concentrated in Quang Dien, Huong Tra, Phong Dinh...

Hydroelectric and irrigation reservoirs in the Huong River basin are operating safely, with their capacity reaching 80-90% of the normal water level. The electricity sector in Hue City has also temporarily stopped supplying electricity to more than 25,000 customers in deeply flooded areas to ensure safety and has restored 100% of electricity by the evening of November 18. The entire city currently has 472 schools holding normal classes, 60 schools have had to temporarily close while waiting for repairs.

Hue City People's Committee requested forces to continue to review damage, support people in cleaning up their houses, ensure communication, food and safety for boats during the complicated rainy days.
