Thoi Binh district has more than 32,000 hectares of shrimp farming using the improved extensive model, of which 17,000 hectares are high-yield improved extensive farming. Many households in the district have succeeded with the high-yield improved extensive shrimp farming model. By applying this model, farmers know how to apply science and technology, reduce many risks in the production process, as well as protect the environment and create high-quality shrimp products.

People visit a household's high-yield extensive shrimp farming model.

A typical example is Mr. Tran Van Gioi, Hamlet 2, Tan Loc Bac Commune, raising 30,000 domesticated tiger prawns on an area of 2 hectares, following the 2-phase improved extensive farming model. After more than 3 months of farming, the shrimp reached a weight of 15-16 shrimp/kg, estimated to harvest more than 450 kg, profit of over 80 million VND/2 hectares/crop, higher than the traditional extensive farming method. Mr. Gioi shared: "Raising according to this model, the shrimp grow faster, reaching a head size compared to before. The family will continue to raise and encourage the surrounding people to do the same to increase income."

The improved extensive farming model is very close to the traditional farming method of farmers, which is less impact of technology, chemicals and monthly shrimp rotation. However, there are improvements in managing the amount of shrimp seed released, releasing shrimp at low density, supplementing food for shrimp by creating natural food or providing food directly to shrimp, using minerals and microorganisms periodically.

Another thing that is easy to do is that the investment cost is not high, only a few hundred thousand VND/ha. Mainly using natural factors to create water environment, create food for shrimp, thereby contributing to improving the environment and producing in a green - clean direction. Most of the households implementing the improved extensive shrimp farming model with 2 high-yield stages guided by the Agricultural Extension Center have been successful.

Engineer Le Thanh Hung, Head of the Thoi Binh District Agricultural Extension Station, recommends: “In order to have a stable water environment during the farming process, farmers should basically use probiotics periodically, sprinkling them as recommended every 7-13 days. Especially, when the shrimp are in the large stage, sprinkling them every 7-10 days will be effective in treating the water for better shrimp growth.”

This model is two to three times more effective than traditional farming. (In the photo: Shrimp are frozen after harvest).

After many years, the natural food source in shrimp ponds is no longer as abundant and rich as before due to the soil being degraded after many years of production. Water sources are polluted by untreated wastewater from industrial shrimp farms and residential areas, causing the quality of farmed shrimp to not meet requirements. Faced with this situation, the 2-phase improved extensive farming model is an effective solution for shrimp farmers. Therefore, local authorities and specialized departments of the district are mobilizing people to replicate the 2-phase black tiger shrimp farming model in communes and towns in the area, contributing to increasing people's income. Because this production model has many outstanding advantages, does not require large capital and high costs, but the economic efficiency is two to three times higher than the traditional farming method, with an average yield of 550 kg/ha/year.

Mr. Nguyen Hoang Bao, Vice Chairman of Thoi Binh District People's Committee, said: "The district will continue to develop this model in communes and towns. The departments have coordinated with the communes and towns to count the improved extensive farming area and replicate the model according to the instructions of the professional departments, so that people can improve the quality of farmed shrimp, achieve productivity and efficiency."

The improved high-yield extensive shrimp farming method using biological products has been applied by many farmers in Thoi Binh district because it brings high economic efficiency to farmers, does not cause degradation of farming areas, and moreover, helps people produce effectively and continuously for a long time, opening up a direction for sustainable and stable development for shrimp farming./.
