Iran's Deputy Telecommunications Minister Behzad Akbari said on April 28 that the country had thwarted one of the most sophisticated cyber attacks ever targeting its infrastructure.
"One of the largest and most complex cyber attacks targeting the country's infrastructure was detected on April 27... Preventive measures have been taken," Akbari said on the X website, without giving details.
Although the official did not name the perpetrators, Iranian officials have often blamed previous cyberattacks on Israel, the country’s greatest enemy. Iran does not recognize Israel, and the two countries have been waging a covert war for years. Tehran has accused Tel Aviv of a series of sabotage and assassinations targeting Iran’s nuclear program.
In February last year, Iran accused Israel of being behind two gas pipeline sabotages that disrupted supplies to at least three provinces. Iran accused Israel and the United States of carrying out a cyberattack in December 2023 that disrupted fuel distribution at 60% of gas stations.
Iran suffered a similar week-long disruption in October 2021, which Tehran said was the result of an unprecedented cyber attack from outside forces./.
