(CLO) The commander of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards has warned Israel not to attack Iran in retaliation for Tehran's missile attack on Israel earlier this month, amid the threat of a wider war in the Middle East.
Speaking on television on October 17, Hossein Salami, Commander-in-Chief of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said: "If (Israel) takes any action to attack any point, we will strike fiercely at the same point (of Israel)," adding that Iran can penetrate Israel's defense system.
Concerns about a wider conflict in the Middle East have grown as Israel plans to respond to an October 1 missile attack by Iran, after Israeli airstrikes killed several senior Iranian and Hezbollah officials.

Earlier on October 16, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin discussed with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant about Israel's operations in Lebanon and Gaza, aimed at preventing a regional war.
During his Middle East tour, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in Cairo. The Egyptian president's office said Sisi reiterated Egypt's call to avoid further conflict.
However, Israel has shown no signs of easing its military operations against Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon after assassinating several of the groups' leaders, and has vowed to punish Iran for the October 1 attack.
Syrian state media reported that Israel attacked the Syrian port city of Latakia early on October 17, and the United States said on October 16 that it had carried out airstrikes in areas of Yemen controlled by Iran-aligned Houthi forces.
