The Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection - Ministry of Agriculture and Environment , the Agriculture and Environment Newspaper, and the Fruit and Vegetable Research Institute jointly organized the forum "Solutions for controlling banana wilt disease".

Forum view
At the forum, experts focused on discussing solutions to respond to the disease and enhance the value of the banana industry. Currently, Vietnam prioritizes the selection and breeding of banana varieties with high yield, good quality, and resistance to Panama disease.

According to experts, the global banana market is wide open.
Panama disease (also known as banana wilt in Vietnam) is a major threat to the banana industry. Experts emphasize that controlling Panama disease needs to be placed within the overall picture of restructuring the banana industry. This includes improving cultivation techniques, support policies, production linkages, and brand building to meet export market requirements.
Bananas are one of Vietnam's 14 key fruit crops. Experts assess that the global banana market is expanding, reaching nearly $140 billion in 2024 and projected to exceed $175 billion by 2029. Given this demand, Vietnam's banana exports could potentially reach $1 billion in the near future, and $4 billion in the not-too-distant future.
