Urgently review and compensate life insurance
Updated with Tuoi Tre Online this evening (July 21), Manulife Insurance said it has decided to pay insurance benefits worth 1.32 billion VND to a customer who unfortunately died in the capsized ship Vinh Xanh 58 (license plate QN-7105) in Ha Long Bay.
As soon as the agency learned of the accident, it immediately began reviewing the data to verify the contract. Today, when the victim’s identity was officially confirmed as a customer of the company, the decision to pay compensation was immediately issued.
The victim participated in a life insurance contract since 2020. The company is supporting the family to complete the necessary procedures and will pay immediately after the funeral.
Tonight, the company said it has completed verification of another customer case, a boy who unfortunately died in a tragic accident. The expected insurance payout is 1.7 billion VND, and is waiting for confirmation from the family to complete compensation procedures.
At the same time, the company continues to review to promptly support other victims, if they are customers who have participated in insurance.
Meanwhile, a representative of Bao Viet Life confirmed that there were 6 customers in Hanoi, Hai Phong, Lao Cai and Tuyen Quang (formerly Ha Giang ) who were victims of the ship capsize. After verification, the company directly visited and supported the families to complete the documents and prioritized the payment of insurance benefits as soon as possible.
According to the contract, the total expected payment to customers is more than 1.2 billion VND. In addition, three contracts with the "Insurance premium exemption benefit" supplementary product will be exempted from all remaining fees, and will still maintain full protection, accumulation and investment benefits until the end of the contract term.
Many other life insurance companies such as AIA, Dai-ichi Life, Chubb Life, Sun Life, Prudential ... are also urgently reviewing information, mobilizing distribution channel teams and related departments to determine whether any of their customers are victims of the ship capsize, in order to provide timely support.
Buy non-life insurance for passengers and crew
Based on the "Certificate of Insurance for River Vessels and Coastal Vessels", the ship Vinh Xanh 58 has been insured at Bao Long. The contract signed on April 14, 2025, effective until April 14, 2026, includes: civil liability insurance of the ship owner (with third parties, passengers) and crew accident insurance.
Specifically, the compensation for damaged passengers is 30 million VND/person/incident. The insurance also compensates the injured crew members (four people) at the same level.
In the non-life insurance sector, as the leading unit in the travel insurance consortium for visitors to Ha Long Bay, Bao Viet said it had closely coordinated with the Ha Long Bay Management Board and relevant authorities immediately after the incident.
The company quickly sent personnel to the scene to participate in the rescue, and was present at the hospital to visit and encourage the victim's family and collect information to ensure insurance benefits for passengers.
This travel insurance program is integrated into the sightseeing ticket, managed by QR code and linked to each tourist's identification information.
Thanks to that, the process of identity verification and compensation processing is carried out quickly, transparently and conveniently.
The consortium providing the above travel insurance package includes Bao Viet Insurance (lead), with members including Saigon - Hanoi Insurance (BSH), Postal Insurance (PTI) and Military Insurance (MIC).
According to regulations, the maximum insurance liability is 30 million VND/person for cases of death or bodily injury during the tour.
The company affirmed that it will promptly resolve insurance benefits with the highest sense of responsibility, in order to promptly share the loss with the victims' relatives.
Humanitarian assistance as prescribed
On July 21, the Insurance Supervision and Management Department (Ministry of Finance) requested insurance companies to quickly coordinate to determine damages, promptly advance and fully pay insurance benefits to victims of the capsized ship Vinh Xanh 58 in Ha Long Bay.
Insurance companies must report their performance results within the day. At the same time, the Vietnam Insurance Association is assigned to coordinate the implementation of humanitarian assistance according to regulations.
Faced with the complicated developments of storm No. 3, the management agency requires insurance companies to proactively respond, minimize losses and promptly pay out in case of natural disasters causing damage.
The Blue Bay 58 capsized in Ha Long Bay on the afternoon of July 19 when it encountered a storm. As of noon today, July 21, authorities have rescued 10 people, found 35 bodies, and 4 people are still missing. The search is still ongoing.
