Khanh Hoa needs 148 billion VND to immediately repair damaged irrigation works

Historic floods destroyed more than 100 irrigation works in Khanh Hoa. Companies urgently proposed 148 billion VND for repairs and production stabilization.

Historic floods in Khanh Hoa have damaged more than a hundred irrigation works. Management companies have urgently requested funding for urgent repairs and to stabilize agricultural production.

According to Khanh Hoa Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited, the estimated damage to the irrigation works is 25 billion VND. The company has reported the damage to the Khanh Hoa Department of Agriculture and Environment.

According to preliminary statistics, the floods have damaged 47 construction items, and also washed away and eroded a large amount of material, including: 652 m3 of concrete, 877 m3 of construction stone, 13,750 m3 of soil and 1,781 m3 of sedimented soil.

The company said that there are 3 irrigation systems that are suffering heavy losses and need to be prioritized for immediate repair. The first is Suoi Dau dam, where the damage is up to 6 billion VND. The damage at the working bridge is very heavy, when the working bridge collapsed, the right bank was eroded about 30m deep, seriously affecting the core concrete structure. Next is the Da Ban irrigation system with a total damage of more than 2.34 billion VND. Finally, the main spillway of Suoi Sim lake has suffered serious landslides of construction rocks, concrete and soil, with an estimated damage of 2 billion VND.

Mr. Dinh Tan Thanh, Deputy Director of Khanh Hoa Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited, expressed his concern that some works are still flooded, typically: Dien - Dien - Phu canal; Cau Doi - Suoi Dau main canal; Am Chua lake flood drainage canal and Chi Tru, Ben Bap dam canal systems, and Cai Ninh Hoa river. This situation makes it difficult to determine the full extent of the damage. Therefore, the company will continue to update after the water recedes.

Freshwater Lake needs 85 billion VND to repair

In the southern part of Khanh Hoa province, heavy rains have also caused severe damage to 93 works managed by Ninh Thuan Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited. The total estimated cost to repair these damages to ensure safety and water regulation is estimated at over 123 billion VND.

Mr. Phung Dinh Thanh, Deputy Director of Ninh Thuan Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited, said that the damage to the irrigation works managed by the company was very severe. In particular, there are 13 works that need to be prioritized for urgent repair funding with an estimated cost of over 100 billion VND to ensure safety and provide irrigation water for the 2025 crop.

Besides, Mr. Thanh is worried about the three most serious landslides that are directly threatening the safety of the project.

First is Nuoc Ngot Lake, which suffered the most damage when water overflowed the dam, collapsing 150m of the breakwater, eroding and collapsing about 200m of the downstream slope, and washing away about 40m of the main pipeline. This project alone requires 85 billion VND to restore.

The second is the water intake culvert at the head of the South canal, Nha Trinh irrigation system, where the land on the right shoulder of the culvert and the right bank of the downstream canal section has been eroded by the water flow on a significant scale. The company proposed a budget of 6.7 billion VND for new construction and dredging. Finally, at the Lam Cam section, where the canal bank has been eroded in many places. The company proposed a budget of 400 million VND for earth filling, reinforcement and dredging, because this is an urgent project.

To overcome the consequences, the companies recommended that the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and the People's Committee of Khanh Hoa province pay attention to arranging the necessary funding. The units will continue to inspect in detail and report fully after the water recedes, in order to bring the irrigation system back to normal operation, serving the farmers.
