Vietnam's livestock industry reduces dependence on antibiotics
In Vietnam, the overuse of antibiotics, especially in pig farming, has caused drug-resistant bacteria to spread and increased the risk of affecting public health.
Experts say the main cause is the misuse of antibiotics, which allows bacteria to develop resistance to the drugs. In livestock farming, antibiotics were once widely used for treatment, disease prevention and growth stimulation, leading to consumption in 2015 exceeding that in the medical sector. The result is reduced treatment effectiveness, increased costs and great losses for farmers.
Faced with this pressure, Vietnam has implemented a roadmap to reduce antibiotics, ban their use in animal feed and aim to completely stop using them for disease prevention purposes from 2026. In this context, vaccines are considered a sustainable solution, helping to increase active immunity and significantly reduce the need for drugs. International experience shows that when vaccines are applied properly, the amount of antibiotics can be reduced by up to 70% while productivity is maintained.
Experts emphasize that the combination of vaccines, biosecurity, proper nutrition and alternative products will help stabilize pig health. The livestock industry is currently transforming strongly towards reducing antibiotic dependence, opening up opportunities to improve product quality and meet export standards.
