Khanh Son: Focus on investing in water supply projects for people

To ensure the supply of domestic water for people in ethnic minority and mountainous areas, in recent years, Khanh Son district has focused resources on investing and upgrading domestic water supply systems. In particular, the district has focused on synchronous investment towards the goal of providing long-term clean water for people to use.

Since the Son Trung commune's domestic water supply system stopped operating nearly 5 years ago, every dry season, people in Ta Nia village and other villages in the commune have had to suffer from a regular shortage of domestic water. To have domestic water, in 2024, Ms. Tro Thi Tham's family invested 10 million VND to dig a well, but it was still not enough for daily use. This dry season, Ms. Tham's family prioritizes using well water for cooking and boiling water for drinking every day, while bathing and washing, they use additional stored rainwater or spring water. "My family and the surrounding households are all happy that the district invested 10 billion VND to build the Son Trung domestic water system to meet clean water quality. Everyone hopes that by July this year, the project will be completed and put into use, at that time we will no longer have to worry about a shortage of domestic water," Ms. Tham said excitedly.

In Son Binh commune, in recent days, households in Xom Co, Lien Binh and Lien Hoa villages have begun to have clean water for daily activities, as the Son Binh domestic water system upgrade project has completed construction, bringing water to each household. Mr. Ta Quoc Phong - Chairman of Son Binh Commune People's Committee said: "To improve the quality of domestic water for people, in 2024, Khanh Son District People's Committee invested 3 billion VND to upgrade Son Binh domestic water system. The project aims to provide clean water to more than 500 households in Xom Co, Lien Binh and Lien Hoa villages, helping Son Binh commune have 50% of households using clean water, meeting the criteria of a new rural commune. In addition to this water supply system, there are 2 other domestic water supply systems in the commune that are also providing hygienic domestic water for people in the commune, including: Caranoa domestic water supply system (in Lien Binh village) and Ko Lak village's self-flowing water system".

Also invested in upgrading at the same time as the Son Binh domestic water supply system, the investment in upgrading the Son Hiep commune domestic water supply system has been basically completed and is in the process of being handed over for use. The leader of the Son Hiep Commune People's Committee said that this project has a total investment of nearly 5 billion VND, providing clean water to nearly 600 households in the commune, helping the rate of households using clean water in the locality to increase to more than 70%.

To ensure the supply of domestic water for people in ethnic minority and mountainous areas, Khanh Son district has To Hap Water Plant invested by Khanh Hoa Water Supply and Sewerage Joint Stock Company, providing clean water for the entire To Hap town and part of Son Trung and Ba Cum Bac communes. In the period of 2017 - 2023, from the central, provincial and district capital sources, 10 centralized domestic water supply works were invested in new construction, upgrading and repair, expanding the network of hygienic domestic water supply to people in 7 communes in the area, with the rate of households using hygienic water reaching 99.6%. However, most of the domestic water supply works were invested and upgraded with outdated technology and equipment, limited scale, not meeting the criteria related to the rate of households using clean water in new rural construction. Meanwhile, the management and operation of the works revealed many shortcomings; People's ability to pay for water is not high, revenue is not enough to cover expenses... leading to the situation where the works quickly deteriorate, not meeting the needs of continuous and quality water supply for people.

Mr. Nguyen Quoc Dong - Vice Chairman of Khanh Son District People's Committee said: "In recent years, providing clean water for daily life has been one of the top priorities of the district in investing in ethnic minority and mountainous areas. The District People's Committee is directing the investor to urgently hand over to the locality 2 projects to upgrade the domestic water system in Son Binh and Son Hiep communes to officially put into operation. For the 2 projects to invest in domestic water supply systems in Son Trung and Thanh Son communes, the district also urged the implementation and construction progress to soon complete and provide clean water for the people. However, currently, in some areas in communes such as Ba Cum Bac, Ba Cum Nam, Son Lam, there are still difficulties in domestic water due to damaged water supply works, so the locality hopes that the province will continue to support investment in clean water supply works in the remaining localities in the district to meet the domestic water needs of the people, especially in the annual dry season".
